To enter Gourdon is intriguing and exciting. The B&B stands at the top of one of the southern France's 'villages perchés'... on a clear day you can see for miles. Imagine slipping out of the door and strolling down through the narrow lanes of the lovely old houses to pick a restaurant for lunch or dinner.
The core of the house is a spiral wood staircase in a 12th-century tower. From the splendid breakfast salon on the ground floor, you ascend to the small ensuite on the first floor, the double with its huge bedroom and the owners' bedroom. Books and pictures abound, right up to the top landing. Take your pick and find a reading spot in the garden. Peace reigns, apart from the cooing pigeons and the booming bells of Saint Pierre.
Historic towns are temptingly close: Souillac with its Friday market (foie gras, flowers, beignets cooked on the spot), foodie capital Sarlat, and the stunning rampart town of Domme.

Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Alan Ravenscroft & Rosemary Stones:
- A must see is Le Gouffre de Padirac (26 Miles). The largest underground natural heritage site in France. A lift takes you deep into the chasm for a flat bottom boat journey along a river through some of the 22km of tunnels so far discovered. Spectacular.
- Rocamadour (18 miles) is one of the most extraordinary sites in France, this sanctuary and famous place of pilgrimage clings dramatically to the rock face 150m above the Alzou Canyon. Henry Plantagenet of England came here in search of a miraculous cure.
- Sarlat la Canéda (16 miles) is a pretty historic town with narrow medieval streets and handsome Gothic and Renaissance houses. It was rebuilt when Charles Vll bestowed privileges upon Sarlat to thank its population for their resistance against the English.
- Les Arques (15 miles) Sculptor Ossip Zadkine and his artist wife fell in love with this charming village and bought a house there. Musée Zadkine is full of their bronzes, tapestries and wood sculptures. There is also a very good restaurant, La Récréation.
- The extraordinary Grottes Préhistorique de Cougnac (2 miles) are notable for their remarkable prehistoric paintings (mammoth, long horned deer, human figures) and exquisite formations of stalactites and stalagmites. One of our favourites. Guided tours.
- Le Chateau de Fénelon (11 miles) is the real thing! A 14th century fortified castle with three layers of fortified walls. Beautiful situation and views. Privately owned but open to the public. Interior rooms furnished with Renaissance pieces. 248.
