In the shadow of a Norman château on the Cherbourg Peninsula, a cosy house for 3 with private parking and restaurants outside the door

Read guest comments

Sit with a glass of cider in the suntrap courtyard, and you’ll be gazing at Bricquebec’s clock tower and the ramparts of one of Normandy’s best-preserved castles. And when it’s time for dinner, there are restaurants aplenty at the end of the shop-studded lane. Secluded yet central with pretty white shutters and flowery window boxes, the 200-year-old stone house feels light and airy; the bathrooms, beds and kitchen are fresh and new. An open-plan living area is bright with photos, leather sofas and an exposed stone feature wall, and up on the landing a wingback chair invites you to rest awhile. There’s a single room off here, with a country-cosy master room up one more (very steep) flight under the eaves: stripped floorboards, feather bedding, velux windows peeping out between the beams. A half-hour south of Cherbourg, Bricquebec lies in a peninsula ringed by beaches, bird-filled marshes and walking trails. What to do? Sand carting, sea kayaking, horse riding, posh seafood in Barneville-Carteret... Just make sure you’re in town on a Monday, when market stalls selling Trappe cheese and fresh fish line the medieval streets.

"We spent Christmas here, and found the house exceptionally welcoming and well furnished, with some unexpected seasonal touches! The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we could possibly need, so that we were able to enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch. The interior of the house was tastefully decorated and immaculately clean. The bedroom and ensuite were very comfortable. An ideal place to stay, in an attractive small market town with good local facilities, and within easy reach of coast and countryside."

"We loved our stay here. The house was really tastefully decorated. It was also spotless. The location is brilliant- right in the centre of a gorgeous little town inhabited by really friendly people. We enjoyed walks in the countryside without having to drive anywhere and had some nice meals within a few minutes walk of the house. It was also only a short drive to Portbail and Barneville-Carteret, where again we enjoyed nice walks and great food. A really beautiful bit of Normandy. The house was also easy to find thanks to Bridget's directions so no stress on arrival. Brilliant."

"We spent a week at 11 Bis at the end of May and thoroughly enjoyed our time in this lovely, well presented traditional property in the centre of Bricquebec . The house has everything one could wish for and the view from the first floor landing at night is wonderful as it looks out onto the flood light tower at the old chateau. A lovely place to stay."

"We were on a Winters break, part work, part holiday. 11 Bis is a perfect place to stay, you can enjoy village life and have the countryside and coast on your doorstep. The House has all amenities you could wish for including Wi-Fi, and the owners were extremely helpful. We hope to make a return visit."

"We very much enjoyed our one week stay. The house is really comfortable and well equipped. A great deal of thought has gone into the layout and style. It was nice to be in the middle of such an attractive place as Bricquebec with so many facilities on our doorstep. The range of shops is excellent and includes bakeries, butchers and wine shops. The two restaurants we went to were both very good. There were plenty of places to visit in the area. This was a good place to stay for an Autumn break."

"This is the perfect location for a relaxing, stress free holiday. 11 bis has been beautifully decorated and lovingly furnished with everything you could want; from modern bathrooms, with perfect showers, to comfy armchairs. The kitchen has everything needed to prepare dinner with ingredients bought in the local markets. We were there for a September fortnight, had glorious weather so could sit out in the little courtyard beneath the castle tower for aperitifs! So much to see and do in Bricquebec and the surrounding area. Would recommend for anyone wanting a relaxing, comfortable holiday."
