Restored mill house with a stream running through the garden, and warm hosts who give you suppers made from their homegrown produce

Lynn and Duncan’s three-storey mill house is surrounded by farmland and apple orchards, and although you’re near the A28 and A29 there’s no hint of traffic noise. Visit in autumn and join in with the cider harvest, when all the neighbours come together to help.

Guests gather together for breakfast around a long table in the relaxed living room or in the conservatory next door. Don’t miss Lynn’s four-course dinners, served in the lovely outdoor dining barn in summer – veg from the garden, Neufchâtel cheese, puddings with fruit from the garden and perhaps some of Duncan’s home-distilled Calvados to finish.

The pretty garden has three bridges crossing a stream and a little waterfall, and the indoor pool is great for a swim year-round. The nearest village is a couple of fields away, there are lovely châteaux to visit, and the Normandy coast is less than an hour’s drive away.

  • From this pastoral idyll, stroll down a grassy lane beside a burbling stream to a pretty village.
  • Take a walk to the cheese farm in the village and sample the famous heart-shaped cheese and their speciality, the cheese with lin seeds.
  • Just down the road is the site of the battle in 1059 where William beat the French king and established himself as Duke of Normandy - before crossing the Channel.
  • Apple products are to be found all around and visits are possible in a local village to learn about the benefits of cider vinegar and sample the local cider with an expert.
  • In addition, there is an opportunity for all boys, young and old, who enjoy model railways to indulge their interest and admire the beautifully crafted miniature houses.
  • 10 kilometres away is the Greenway, linking London to Paris, an ideal environment for walking and cycling.
