A very special old priory from the late Middle Ages and a separate tower with lush, rambling gardens, sitting in a charming, sleepy village

Come for complete peace in this green, undulating countryside with forests lining the stream which winds along the valley floor – walks will be sublime in the surrounding château parkland and there is an abundance of wildlife, especially birds. Choose to stay in the Priory or the Tower and larger parties can take both for happy gatherings of friends and family. Lazy summer days can be spent in the gardens or by the pool.

Neither kitchen is huge but they are both packed with much equipment (Paula is a chef and sometimes offers meals) and you are left a delicious homemade lemon meringue cake and a bottle of fizz along with all the basics for cooking. Both gardens have braziers, lots of chairs and tables and you're surrounded by high stone walls, fruit trees and colourful herbaceous borders. Bedrooms are filled with good fabrics and antiques; all have lovely views.

Visit châteaux, wineries and wonderful food markets.

Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Paula Dormer:

  • Pressigny, a tiny village, sits on the edge of a 10,000 year old riverbed, which today has Charolais cows meandering through grass meadows. Surrounded by forests and meadows teeming with rare birds, it is a nature lover's dream.
  • Puy du Fou, possibly the best day out you will ever have, is France's best kept secret. Incredible shows depict the history of France, from Viking raids, the Three Muskateers and Joan of Arc to a full size Roman arena with chariot racing.
  • St. Loup, twelve minutes from the Priory, is a beautiful medieval village with a stunning chateau. The owners give private guided tours. Boats are avalable to hire on the river in the summer. Lovely for a pre dinner stroll in any season.
  • Parthenay old town, on the western section of the Santaigo de Compostella pilgramage route, with its weavers and dyers road, medieval town gate, walls, towers and ruined castle, paid for by King John, Eleanor of Aquitaine's son, is a must see.
  • Garden lovers will adore the Jardins de Gué, ten minutes from Le Prieuré. On the riverbank at Gourgé are a number of gardens to wander through. The owner loves talking plants to visitors. It's delightful to picnic on the edge of the river
  • Saumur, on the bank of the Loire, has a stunning castle to visit and lots of choice for wine tasting. Explore the caves where the wine is stored and see the troglodite houses built into the cliffs. Visit Fontevraud Abbey en route.
