A 1930s Riviera hotel with a pool in a palm grove and exotic birds in cages. Indoors, Hôtel Windsor has introduced the Thirties to the 21st century by asking contemporary artists to decorate some of the rooms. The result is gifts of wit, provocation, flights of fancy and minimalist sobriety: Joan Mas's La Cage à Mouche, cosmopolitan Ben's writing on the walls, Antoine Beaudoin's frescoes of Venice, Egypt, India - and Tintin, all-time favourite.
Plain white beds have contrasting cushions or quilts, furniture is minimal but interesting, little bathrooms are delightful and one room is painted in glimmering gold. Clear bright colours everywhere, including the richly exotic public areas; the hotel is passionate about contemporary art and chooses a different artist every year to reinvent the lobby.
Outside, a tropical garden is a good spot for breakfast on warm days among bamboo, a giant rubber tree and swathes of bougainvillea.
