A roomy house on a hill with views over the valley and town below. Just the ticket for a gathering of clans, half an hour from Paris

The house looks genuinely 18th-century, surrounded by ancient trees and parkland, but it is quite new: clever use of recycled timber and recovered architectural details have created a spacious and beautiful building. The sitting room is elegant and comfortable with antique furniture and china, lovely views over the garden and high, beamed ceilings. On colder days you can light the fire and gather around it.

The large, well-equipped kitchen has doors to a terrace for eating outdoors (also a barbecue) and you'll find a bottle of wine or local cider plus all the basics for cooking. The lower terrace has an attractive, heated pool with sun loungers and a wisteria-covered pergola. Wander further through old roses, fruit trees and vines for large lawns and oak trees beyond.

In the village at the bottom of the hill there is a good pizzeria or drive 15 minutes to Enghien-les-Bains for restaurants and shops.
