Rare as a bird, a proper old fashioned French inn on the side of the road in a sleepy village, a restoration project for the new owners

Read guest comments

A calming, charming spot just a few miles from the autoroute and an ideal stopover for travellers fresh off, or headed for, the Calais ferry. The nearby countryside brims with lesser-known towns such as the medieval, fortified, Montreuil and there are châteaux, churches and museums to visit. Inside is pretty much the same as it's been for many years, with a hallway, dining room and sitting area with a blazing fire when it's chilly.

Plain, unfussy bedrooms are slowly being refurbished, all are in the main building apart from one in the courtyard, ideal for those with dogs. The restaurant is open for all meals and the menu is as retro as the inn itself, unchanged for decades. Trout is fished from the pond in the park and there are crêpes with ham, mushrooms and Béchamel sauce. Wines and regional beers are also served.

At breakfast you'll get honey from local bees, fresh pastries and bread, hams, local cheese and good coffee.

"Ours was a one night stop over stay on the way to the Chunnel. Auberge D' Inxent is a real gem, lovely accommodation and excellent hospitality and Food from Jean-Marc and Laurence Six and at a very reasonable price"

"I booked this for 6 of us on our motorcycles for our last night in france as it was not far from the tunnel & looked more interesting than a generic hotel. It was definitely the right choice. It is in a lovely quiet hamlet & is just perfect. From the beautifully clean rooms, comfortable beds & simply delicious food (the oh so fresh trout & those chocolates!) to the warm welcome and plentiful breakfast, we all loved this Auberge & the unassuming owner Our only regret; we were only staying one night. We will be back "

"Having had lunch there a couple of times (it's less than an hour's drive from Calais), we thought that it would be nice to stay. We were very pleased: comfortable rooms, lovely food, great service. Don't forget to visit the chocolate factory just down the road."

"If I had a favourite place to stay, this would have to be it. Perhaps not everyone's ideal (no tv, no wifi) but an oasis of calm and civility in the delightful Vallée de la Course. Just 40 miles from Calais, this is our reward after the gruelling drive from the N. East, and our battery-charge for the return. Only 5 rooms (so book early!) comfortable, clean, simply but tastefully decorated, and so quiet. But the real treasure is below, in the restaurant which champions local produce, proudly presented with confidence in its excellence -délicieux - and supported by such a wine list - formidable."

"We stayed here on the way down to Southern France. We were so delighted we booked in for the return trip. You're made to feel welcome as soon as you enter and the rooms are very clean and comfortable. The food is worthy of Michelin stars and the whole ambience of the place makes it worth more visits."

"I would describe this more as a restaurant with rooms than a chambre d'hotes. The meal was superbly cooked and delicious (from the 29 Euro menu)and the wine list was the longest and the most comprehensive I've ever seen! Drinks are charged for separately,as in a restaurant, as was breakfast. Room was fine but in severe weather the heating may not keep up. We stayed for one night. A pretty location and building in an attractive village and opposite a church."

"Our second stay here and it's now set as our "last night before the ferry" place for good. Food, both for dinner and breakfast, is excellent - locally sourced, well chosen, very well cooked. And freshly squeezed OJ for breakfast. And the bedrooms, while they can be small with thin walls, have character and are spotless. check out the gorgeous handmade light shades. and the bathrooms are terrific - ours this time was enormous with an equally enormous bath. ask Jean Marc for his wine recommendations - they are always spot on as you'd expect, and not expensive which we hadn't expected. The aperitif maison is delicious btw. Thumbs up, 5 gold stars, brilliant!"
