A townhouse with a walled garden by the church in a peaceful village where friendly Scottish owners feed and look after you well

Come for delicious food: vegetables from the garden, organic, seasonal local produce and as much that is foraged as possible. Breakfast is a buffet, served in the dining room or outside on the terrace: home baked bread, homemade jams, fresh fruit salad, pastries and yogurts, or something cooked like frittata or an omelette. Table d'hôte menus are planned in advance but will usually include soup, pâté, a meat dish, cheese, then pudding.

You sleep in comfortable, traditional bedrooms, one in the attic, with fresh flowers, antique furniture and pretty windows. There's a real fire in the dining room for chilly days, and a couple of comfy chairs. Plan your day here before heading out. You're in the town square of Saint-Pierre-du-Lorouër, quiet and residential and surrounded by farmland, so walks are lovely.

Return to cool off in the little wooden plunge pool or enjoy a spot of yoga with Sarah, a qualified teacher.

  • A few km's to the south of us are the lovely villages and towns situated along the banks of the River Loir; La Chartre-sur-Loir for example. Wine tasting, brocantes and vide-greniers most weekends (or the keen Treasure Hunters )
  • Only 12km away are the lakes at Marcon, with a sand beach, slide & lifeguard, great swimming & water sports, plus a small park for the kids. Ideal for families with young kids. The Bugatti circuit is close by in Le Mans, to drive on the Mulsanne straight!
  • The forest of Bercé is an ideal place for walking, horse-riding, cycling and mountain biking (315 km of waymarked itineraries). A dappled network of trails...Mushroom picking tours arranged in season, that combines a day foraging and a day cooking!
  • It's well worth visiting the bio wine producers of the Maison Rouge, a favourite amongst many local wine producers - although there are lots to recommend - Croisard, (house special) Freseneau & Gigou..Wine & Cheese tours can be arranged.
  • The Loir and surrounding tributaries offer beautiful fishing & kayaking locations, we can tailor packages and an experienced guide. including permits, rods & equipment and the perfect picnic ....as well as hopefully BBQing the catch of the day.
  • There is the local market on a Wednesday - that sell the most amazing unpasturised organic goats cheese, i use organic & local products whenever possible for Table d'hôtes ( Le Chaton Rouge is a now fully liscenced restaurant establishment)

"This small establishment is a real gem! clean, comfortable, spacious rooms with tea/coffee making facilities and quiet. Sarah is a fantastic host and provided us with a warm welcome; she prepared a really excellent evening meal, having already established any likes/dislikes. Most of the produce was locally sourced and had wonderful flavours. The breakfast was equally delicious, with homemade bread etc. It definitely rates as the best of our hotel/B&B choices."

"Professionally run and charming small Hotel in a small village south of Le Mans. Superb welcome and excellent freshly-prepared breakfast 'en- terrasse' or in the old French barn - where evening 4-5 course meals (plus wine) are also served by arrangement with the owner, Sarah. Lovely old furniture in the 5 bedrooms but with modern facilities and en-suite bathrooms. Friends and I stayed in 2016 and also got some nice tips on visiting local chateaux and vineyards plus a day out to Tours is a must. We liked it and definitely staying again. Top Banana !"

"We stayed overnight to break our journey to Bordeaux and were so glad to discover Le Chaton Rouge! A very tastefully restored house - charming room with beautiful French bed and sweet-smelling linen. We couldn't have wished for a warmer welcome from out hostess and enjoyed meeting friends and family. Lovely rural setting with lively local bar and excellent nearby restaurant. Delicious and generous feast for breakfast. Highly recommended. "

"We stayed at Le Chaton Rouge, just for a stop off day. So gutted we couldn't stay longer as it was so beautiful. The rooms and building (she is an interior designer as well), but also Sarah and her amazing cooking! She cooked us a thai curry and boy was it good. She even cooked the kids a kid friendly version. She told us about all the things there were to do in the area and it was really helpful. She is a great host and I highly recommend a visit or two (or three). We will be back - asap! x"

"We stopped at Le Chaton Rouge for one night on route back to Calais. Sarah was welcoming and warm from the minute we arrived, and she is a fantastic cook! The property has been renovated beautifully and we had a very comfortable and enjoyable night. I would stay there again next time I am driving down France/in the that direction."

" This is by far the best B&B we've stayed in, in France. Sarah welcomes you with a huge glass of wine, followed by delicious tea for the children and even more delicious dinner for adults in her pretty courtyard. It is a magical place, full of character, beautiful interiors, lovely bathroom and very comfy beds. Amazing breakfasts too! A very very special pace, we will be back for sure! Charlotte Colville"

"We did a bit of a road trip with our 3 month old baby and this was the last place we stayed in before returning home. It was hands down our favourite! Absolutely beautiful place, you can tell the owner was an interior designer, it was stylish, original, but cosy and homely all at once. Sarah made us feel very welcome and we felt immediately relaxed. We had paid for the 4 course meal with wine, which was all freshly prepared by Sarah and served in the most beautiful dining area. Breakfast was similarly delicious and plentiful. A perfect end to a holiday and we would without question recommend!"

"We stayed here en route to travelling further South and it was a fabulous place to stay. The rooms are generous with great character and lovely decor, and Sarah is a wonderful host. Delicious breakfast too! We would all heartily recommend this as a B&B."

"I stayed at Le Chaton Rouge during the race week for the 24 Hours of Le Mans with my Wife and 15 month old baby. The B&B is conveniently located 40 mins from the circuit (handy tip - buy a 'Vert' parking pass as this avoids most of the circuit chaos on race days). The B&B was superb and could not be faulted, Sarah really looked after us, drinks upon arrival in the garden, evening meal as a take out from the local bar and super breakfasts every day. The room was lovely and spacious for all our stuff (inc. travel cot), there was even an offer of an adjoining room for our baby."

"My husband and I stayed at Le Chaton Rouge in June while on a road trip from Paris to the south of France. Sarah made us feel so welcome with complimentary wine in her beautiful backyard. She then recommended a restaurant in a local town and called ahead to make reservations for us. Our room was very charming and eclectic. The bathroom was fully modernized with a claw foot tub. Our breakfast was amazing with homemade jam and other wonderful things to savour. Sarah is a wonderful host and so fun to talk with. I would definitely return to this B&B just to see Sarah again!!"

"We tried to get in here a couple of years ago when we went to Le Mans after a freind recommended it, but were too late. However the owner very kindly asked around and found us somewhere nearby. This year we were luckier and got the top floor suite. The room was spacious, clean, nothing was too much trouble for Sarah, and despite being on the main road there is virtually no traffic after 6pm so it was very peaceful. There is very little in the village except the small bar, so Sarah made a table d'hote for all the guests one night We would definately go back next time we're in the area"

"A beautiful town house stylishly restored and Sarah couldn't have been more welcoming. Dinner in the garden was a delightful way to begin our holiday in France."

"An excellent B & B; lovely house with great character and rooms. Sarah was very welcoming and friendly and we enjoyed dinner in the courtyard at the back of the house where we met the 'le chaton rouge'. It is about 4 to 5 hours south from Calais and an ideal place to stop on the way to the Loire or further south."

"This was our first B & B on our visit to France. We stayed at three B & B's over five days and this was the very best. It is a delightful house with a very artistic mix of old and new. Sarah was the perfect host and provided a great selection of food for breakfast and a wonderful dinner in the outdoor dining room. In fact the best meals we had in France. Wished we could have stayed longer. We would highly recommend this B & B for a short or longer stay."

"We were warmly welcomed by our hostess Sarah. Our rooms was spacious and very clean with a really lovely shower room and beautiful decor. We enjoyed a lovely dinner in the outdoor dining room and had a very peaceful night's sleep afterwards. The breakfast was very substantial and tasty. We really enjoyed the soda bread! We would highly recommend a stay at Le Chaton Rouge. If we are in the area again we will most certainly return!"

"Sarah is a wonderful friendly host in her beautifully restored village house. Along with George the cat, there are big breakfasts and comfortable beds provided, even a nice little secluded garden to sit and have a gin and tonic should the mood take you. Very much enjoyed our stay there and would definitely go back in future."

"What a lovely place to stay. Sarah could not have been more accommodating to our family (including our 2 little ones). We enjoyed a lovely meal in the outside dining room after the children had eaten their favourite meal and gone to bed (we could keep an ear out from the garden). A lovely sleep and a super breakfast. Very relaxing Thank you!"

"Wonderful visit to a beautiful home, a generous host in a beautiful location. Sarah could not have done any more to make us feel welcome, the rooms were beautiful and the food at dinner and breakfast was superb. We will detour time and again to visit Le Chaton Rouge in the future. "

"Our first visit and Sarah made us feel at home and nothing was too much trouble. A glass of cool bubbly on arrival added to the ambience! She also gave us some excellent recommendations of where to eat locally. Breakfast was fab with home made bread one morning too. Room very comfortable. All in all a great find and we will definitely stay again when in the area."

"One of those occasions you hope for but can't plan - the ideal short break in France, in extremely comfortable accommodation, superb food, and warm and welcoming hospitality. We are definitely going to repeat this!"

"Le Chaton-Rouge is a lovely B&B in the Loire. We just stayed for one night on our way back from the Bordeaux area and it was the perfect place to stop over. However we would have happily stayed for longer as the room was so comfortable and Sarah was charming and generous in her hospitality. The food was excellent - all freshly grown, local produce. A great find!"

"This is a fantastic B&B close to Le Mans in a lovely rural setting. We stayed overnight on our way to the Dordogne and again on the way back but this would be an ideal base for exploring the Loire Valley. The breakfasts were great but dinner was outstanding, served in the garden and accompanied by copious amounts of the local wines. Sarah, our charming hostess, is a great cook and was thoughtful and considerate in every way. The rooms were beautifully furnished and very comfortable. All in all, the best accommodation we have stayed at in France."

"Sarah was a wonderful hostess who made us very welcome and was more than helpful trying to arrange the next night's stay. The dinner was excellent, taken in the outside 'dining room'. Without doubt a place to be recommended, and we wish her all success for the future."

"Fabulous welcome, beautiful house and rooms. Everything you need after a long journey. Best of all - something you rarely find in France - comfortable beds. Can't wait to return. Recommend visitors stock up on the excellent local wine (Coteaux du Loir, Jasnieres) in nearby La Chartre"

"Fantastic. Our hostess was brilliant - could not have been more accommodating for our two young kids. The room was beautifully put together - like a brochure, but did not compromise comfort one bit. We enjoyed a meal on the night we stayed; it was amazing - all organic and home grown (or grown in the village) and served in an outside dining area. Breakfast was just as good, and we were sent on our way with warm wishes, some provisions and a real desire to return."

"We received such a lovely warm welcome after a long drive and arriving near 9pm. Sarah organised dinner for us in a local restaurant and we soon relaxed. A lovely, comfortable room with tasteful, uncluttered decor and delicious breakfast. We would love to have stayed longer and hope to re visit. Rod and April Marley"

"A very warm welcome from Sarah. A delicious evening meal beside the log fire in a traditional French kitchen, beautifully restored and full of period detail.Lovely linen, comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms to-die-for. Following a breakfast including fresh croissants from the baker's opposite and her grandmother's soda bread, Sarah even sent us on our way with a picnic. We shall return!"
