In tranquil countryside close to the Ring of Kerry, a rustic farmhouse with wonderful stargazing and brilliant walks starting from the door

At this homely cottage beneath the Kerry Dark Sky Reserve, you can explore sandy beaches by day and gaze at galaxies by night. Built centuries ago, Dereenaraig is a rustic, whitewashed farmhouse surrounded by fields and hills. Come here to escape busy cities, write a novel or hike through valleys; only lowing cows and clucking chickens disturb the silence. Walks start from the door and you're a kilometre from both the coast and the Ring of Kerry. Inside, tradition and practicality combine. The original dresser still stands in the kitchen and the thoughtful neighbours leave you a welcome basket including seasonal vegetables, homemade jams and herbs. A wood-burner warms the big, old-fashioned dining room and there's a comfortable sitting room stocked with books and DVDs for rainy days. Upstairs, two bright and airy double rooms have antique beds, while there's a cosy twin room for kids. Back downstairs, there are a couple of simple bathrooms. The cottage stands within an acre of wild garden where energetic little ones can roam free. Active families will also love kayaking around Kenmare Bay or rock-pooling along the beautiful Iveragh Peninsula.

  • Beautiful scenery and unspoilt beaches. Mountains tumble into the sea and are fringed by rugged shores and unspoilt beaches. A 20 minute stroll from the house will take you to the secluded Cove Strand another 15 minutes takes you to White Strand Beach.
  • Derrynane House and National Park are just 6 miles away. As well as the Daniel O’Connell museum and beautiful gardens the park has walks around the woodlands, a fairy trail, tea rooms and one of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland.
  • Sea sports, nature trails, horse riding and fishing are all available in the local area. From motorised kayaking to exploring rock pools, golf to sea, river and lake fishing, there are a wide array of ways to explore and discover Kenmare Bay.
  • The Iveragh Peninsula is abundant with historic sites including rock art, stone circles, ring forts and castles. Books are provided in the house to help you discover the hidden history of the area.
  • Kerry produces some of the best sea food in Europe and local fare is outstanding. Locally there are several great bars, restaurants and Tea Rooms. Many cafes and restaurants in the local towns include local specialities on the menu.
  • The cottage is within the Kerry Dark Sky reserve. A gold tier reserve, one of only 3 in the world, the area has minimal light pollution and, on a clear night, the sky is alight with the most amazing display of starts, planets and galaxies.
