Books, meadow flowers, a rocking chair by a cosy fire at this treasure-trove cottage of beautiful things - down tiny lanes in west Cork

Read guest comments

Drop south over the mountain, turn right towards the sea, lose yourself in tiny lanes, then find heaven. You're cast adrift in the lush folds of west Cork, as lovely a spot as you will find anywhere in the world. As for this gorgeous cottage, well, Beth's impeccable style has covered the whole place with something beautiful and if you abhor the bland and predictable and yearn instead for old-fashioned splendour, then your dreams will come true here. Outside, wild daisies and climbing roses hog the limelight; inside, a treasure trove of beautiful things waits to be discovered. The sprawling art is utterly irreproachable, there are books by the hundred, home-grown flowers, a rocking chair in front of a peat fire in the cosy sitting room. Nothing is ordinary, viz. the shoe trees nailed to the panelled wall by the claw-foot bath on which to hang your towel. Elsewhere, a gilt mirror above the big bed, lovely rugs on shiny wood floors and a super kitchen that will fulfil every need. Doors open onto a path that leads down to a wild flower meadow. A perfect place to escape the world.

"Charming cottage with a charming owner. Beth could not have been more helpful with suggestions for trips and where to eat. Lisin na Cre is situated within the most peaceful and quiet surroundings; within easy reach of the most wonderful hill walks. A fifteen minute drive and you are facing the Atlantic lapping the cleanest beaches imaginable. Thoroughly recommended"

"It was a joy to discover (without exactly knowing what we were going to face) the secret hideaway 'Lisin na Cre'. The Cottage transpires a vibe of calmness, peace and harmony,a home rather than a house, not one of those only to be rented. The places to go were as good as anywhere else with that exotic touch, far, occulted, nostalgic, happy, the Ireland we love. We left longing for more and we will return in summer time. Beth's a host who gives everything, her smile exudes warmth and her clever use of colours in the rooms reflect this. "

"County Cork, Ireland is full of lush green hills, crumbling castles, rugged granite mountains, fine Georgian architecture and sleepy fishing villages, all surrounded by the brooding waters of the Irish Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Full of mystery, myths and legends. There's no better place to position yourself for exploring the above than in the cottage at Roaring Water Bay, with the excellent host 'Beth'. We need to return purely to enjoy the book collection! It's dreamy and we found it extremely hard to leave this rural idyll. "

"We – a fiftyish couple - found Roaring Water Bay Cottage very suitable for relaxing in a tranquil garden and as a base for discovering Ireland‘s beautiful South West. The cottage is nicely decorated and Beth is a most charming neighbour. We were not too impressed by Ballydehob, but found many other attractions within easy reach. It has been a great pleasure to visit and stay."

"Absolutely wonderful stay! Beth is a lovely, lovely host who went out of her way to make us welcome and comfortable. The cottage is gorgeous and beautifully decorated and the gardens are a delight to explore. A haven of peace and tranquility which we and our 13 month old son adored! Thank you Beth! "

"What a delight to arrive at Lisin na Cre and find a low, pink cottage smothered in roses and full of books and paintings. From here we explored the quiet lanes of the Mizen, Sheep's Head and Beare peninsulas where the coastal landscape is dotted with the ruins of towers houses, castles and megalithic monuments. Our charming host Beth was always happy to recommend walks and restaurants and it was such a pleasure to share the occasional glass of wine with her outside what is without doubt the nicest cottage we have ever rented over many years of self catering - we hope to return soon."

"It was a privilege to stay at Lisin Na Cre. This lovely cottage is full of character (and books), well appointed and comfortable. The quiet, rural location is ideal for exploring the beautiful coast and countryside of south west Ireland and the helpful suggestions and recommendations about walks, restaurants and shops from the charming hostess, Beth, were invaluable. We would like to think that we'll return with more of the family - young children will love the orchard and garden. "

"Myself and my hubby along with our 2 little boys (3 & 1) had an absolutely wonderful time at this pretty cottage. The interiors are adorable, vintage furniture and beautiful artwork. Beth is an unbelievably attentive host who made our stay even more enjoyable. Our boys adored the gardens, playing on swings and in the treehouse. It's just the most perfect, relaxing setting and so close to lots of great activities and sights. Rain or shine our whole family loved every minute! This was our second visit and we'd go back in a heartbeat. We only wish we could have stayed longer! "
