Candlewick Cottage - Self-catering in Co. Donegal
Heeneys, F94 K8W9, Co. Donegal
Ulster,
Irlanda
This large space will be lovely in any weather. A dual-aspect wood-burner divides the sitting and dining room for cosy evenings in or convivial meals and you get a remote control cinema screen, plenty of comfortable seating, a living room den for those who need to escape and a really well-equipped kitchen. The sitting room has glass on three sides and views soar over the pretty Eske valley – fold back the door to the wooden veranda, completely covered, so even if it's raining you can wrap up warm and feel at one with nature. In summer it will be blissful.
Children will adore the play area with wooden playhouse, climbing frames, swing, slide and trampoline, cooks will appreciate the swish kitchen, barbecue maniacs will find a Big Green Egg and walkers can ease their aches in the Japanese indoor hot tub.
Bright bedrooms are all a good size (one on a mezzanine level above the sitting room) and have peaceful views; bathrooms are sparkling and warm. It's a great holiday home.

Local points of interest from Brenda McManamon:
Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Brenda McManamon:
- Walk to the top of Sliabh Liag or experience the highest sea cliffs in Europe from the sea itself. If you're lucky enough you may even see the glorious dolphins, seals and whales that frequent these waters. St. John's Point is also spectacular and wild.
- Donegal town and the neighbouring towns of Ballyshannon, Bundoran, Ardara and Kilcar have a great offering of music festivals and traditional Irish music sessions in local pubs and hotels. Killybegs, offers famously fresh local seafood and deep sea angling
- There is an abundance of beautiful beaches close by. Rossnowlagh and Bundoran for their popular surf scene, Murvagh for its Links golf course, Tullan Strand for its horse riding and many others dotted along the coastline for their superb charm
- Donegal town shops and craft village to indulge in traditional knitwear, tweeds and crafts from the locality. Relax in the town square and watch the world go by. Sit on the deck of Candlewick Cottage and look out for our resident red squirrel and deer.
- At the end of the lane you can get yourself on the Bluestack Way and experience the true wilderness of the Donegal landscape. Head for Ardara and drop in to Nancy's Bar for some delicious, locally sourced food and warm hospitality.
- Walk the mountains or the Old Railway track at Barnesmore Gap and feel the majesty of the wide valley carved by a glacier on its way to the Atlantic Ocean. It's an area steeped in folklore and heritage. Stop in at Biddy's O'Barnes as it's unlucky to pass.
