Come to discover the rich volcanic foothills of northern Etna and its (over 80) small wine producers – DOC certified, mainly reds. The centuries-old palmento space, made of lava rock, forms part of a group of buildings – cellars, machinery storage and two gorgeous beamed rooms for tastings with full-length windows looking towards majestic Etna to one side and the foothills and vineyards to the other.
You stay in the cottage, a short distance away in the middle of the vineyards. Inside is super contemporary, reflecting the dark colours of the earth and rock but with almost constant sunshine flooding in through view-filled windows. Wide doors from the living area open to a terrace for outdoor meals with the filmic backdrop of Etna's snowy peak, and wildflowers flourish in spring; the feel is most refreshing. Clever doors disguise a compact kitchen when not in use – there are basics for cooking and of course some red wine.
Drive or walk 3km to a good restaurant serving pizzas, pasta and Sicilian dishes.
