Villa Lena - Hotel in Tuscany
Strada Comunale di Toiano, 42, 56036 Palaia, Pisa
Tuscany,
Italia
Midway between Pisa and Florence, high on a hill circled by dense forests, marching cypress trees and silvery olive groves, this sumptuous hotel will ensconce you happily in laid-back luxury. They make it easy to pitch up and stay put: float in one of two pools, unbend in a yoga class on the deck, eat farm to table meals in the smart restaurant, stroll in glorious countryside.
Artist retreats are hosted in the main 19th-century stately home while you stay in superbly restored farm buildings that fan out across the huge estate. Every en suite bedroom, apartment and private villa (both with their own pools) are smart and stylish with bags of space. And there's more: a library, games room, home cinema, dedicated work spaces if you must check your emails.
Zip down to Palaia (30 minutes) on a bike borrowed from reception, climb to the top of Toiano Vecchio for panoramic views, take a day trip to Pisa (40km) or Florence (60km).

- On our doorstep there are plenty of accessible hikes, follow the hiking sign posts to reach the best viewpoints on the estate or stroll up to Toiano for a picture perfect, panoramic sunset spot. Villa Lena may be tucked away in the Tuscan hills but we’re not far from the beach.
- Italy is famous for its bustling markets and festivals celebrating seasonal produce. Lucca and Arezzo offer a rich variety of vintage textiles, clothing and furniture. People come from far and wide to pick up unique finds and exceptionally good value antiques.
- Aside from the nearby cities of Pisa, Lucca and Florence there are many wonderful towns in the vicinity to discover: San Gimignano – visit Galleria Continua Volterra – explore the Etruscan museum and ancient amphitheater Lari – see how they make pasta at the family run Martelli factory
- Tuscany is home to some of Italy’s most enchanting gardens, from Villa Reale in Lucca to La Foce in the Val d’Orcia, in Southern Tuscany. In Florence alongside the world famous Boboli and Bardini gardens in Florence you can also visit the lesser known Villa Gamberaia and Villa Castello.
- We also love the cherry festival each June in Lari, San Miniato’s white truffle fair in November and the famous Palio in Siena which takes place in July and August.
