A big, homely farmhouse on the Umbria/Tuscany border for family holidays filled with sunshine, outdoor frolics and good food

This handsome 1700s organic winery sits in front of an ancient wood with views over marching vines and the distant peak of Monte Amiata. Climb the grand staircase up to a wisteria-wreathed loggia and step into your generous first floor home-from-home.

Snuggle up on comfy sofas in front of the open fire, relax in big bedrooms (three suites have their own sitting rooms, all are en suite) under beamed ceilings. Outside there's masses of space: roam the estate, play tennis, fish on the lake. Spend sunny days by the pool which has a kitchen, barbecue, dining table and chairs, a loo and shower – everything you need to stay outside all day. Eat under cover as the sun sets.

Head for Trasimeno beach, 6km; borrow a bike and pedal down woodland trails; head to numerous restaurants serving delicious local dishes; cookery classes, wine tastings, a private chef, sailing on Trasimeno can all be arranged but need to be booked in advance.

Local points of interest from Marina:

Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Marina:

  • Passionate about 20th C art? Then don't miss Alberto Burri’s birthplace in Città di Castello. Today the town hosts a collection of the artist’s works at Palazzo Albizzini and at the magnificent Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco, a huge converted tobacco drying barn.
  • For a unique and quite oneiric experience, visit La Scarzuola near Montegabbione. It is the folly of Italian Midcentury architect Tommaso Buzzi, who designed and built his “ideal city” around a Franciscan convent on a hilltop. Make sure you book ahead!
  • For antiques lovers, the market in Arezzo is among the best known in Italy. It takes place in the city centre on the first week-end of every month and hosts over 500 stalls.
  • Should archaeology be your thing, the area is scattered with Etruscan remains. Among the most noteworthy is the Hypogeum of the Volumni near Perugia. The large underground tomb is made up of several rooms, reproducing a house, adorned with statues.
  • Isola Maggiore in Lake Trasimeno is the perfect destination on a warm spring day. Time seems to have stopped in the quaint fishing village. A short uphill walk through an olive grove leads up to the 14th C church, where a beautiful view can be enjoyed.
  • And finally, shopoholics will be happy to know that In the area there are a number of top outlet villages, notably The Mall in Reggello, Valdichiana Outlet Village, and Barberino Design Village. There are also numerous factory outlets, including Prada's.
