Climb up through scrubby oak woodland and the ancient convent appears above you on the ridge - a lovely pile of elegant stone buildings around a central courtyard with views in all directions. Dating from the 12th century, the building was rescued from a dilapidated state by a previous owner with an eye for design.
The apartments wouldn't look out of place in an interiors magazine. A classy minimalism of stark walls and old brick floors combines with luxurious detail: quality linens on deep mattresses, light muslin at windows, fresh flowers and dark wood antiques. It feels pleasantly exclusive here but in no way pretentious - just relaxingly country-chic.
A large terrace with weathered terracotta pots, a bank of lavender and a sweep of gravel steps leads to the pool area for some basking. Courteous and smiling Antonietta will show you around and if you need a bit of urban action, Umbertide, Perugia and Assisi are not far.
