An easy drive from Verona, close to Borghetto, is a 14th-century mill in bird-chirped grounds. Here live Pietro, Mattea plus cats, geese and swans - welcome to the loveliest family. The guest bedrooms are in two outbuildings – rustic, ivy-strewn and charmingly revived. All the three rooms have a private entrance. White walls are rough plastered, colours subdued, bathrooms are contemporary and views are breathtaking – over park, river, 14th-century bridge and hilltop castello.
Breakfast on a fine day by the water under the willows; on a rainy one in a big canvas gazebo. Pietro and Mattea go out of their way to give each guest the breakfast of their dreams... find yourself feasting on pastries, fruits, hams and cheeses lovingly and locally sourced.
Watch the swans drift by, nod off in the sun chair or check out one of the golf courses – Pietro is an instructor.
