Elegant B&B with literary links on a rugged stretch of Cornish coast. Beautiful terraced gardens run right down to the estuary

There's real warmth and a hint of romance in the air here. This attractive Edwardian villa was author Rosamunde Pilcher's childhood home, there are dreamy views of the garden from airy bedrooms, and Marie greets you with tea and cake.

Breakfast is served at a shared table overlooking the garden – with the sun streaming in through the huge bay window. It's a generous spread including fruit, yogurt, cheese and meats. Jams, marmalades and breads are mostly homemade and delicious.

Walk to the flawless sands of Porthkidney, spot the many birds on the estuary or play golf at the local course. Stroll down the terraced lawns and you'll reach a tiny station, hop on a clifftop train and enjoy one of the most scenic routes in the country. Eight minutes of spectacular coastal views later and you can be exploring the galleries and beaches of St Ives. Have a drink from the trolley in the evening then head out to a cosy pub.

  • The Firs was the birthplace and childhood home of author Rosamunde Pilcher, OBE. Then called No. 2, The Elms, the house, beach and local area are clearly recognisable in her books which have sold 60m copies and been successfully televised across Europe.
  • Enjoy all aspects of a Cornish holiday from this, the narrowest part of Cornwall. Here the rugged, sandy North is only 7 miles from the gentler, wooded South. The almost island-like location creates the famous, intense blue light and mild climate.
  • Through the garden gate, the five beaches of St Ives are just 8 minutes on the stunning cliff-top train or 45 minutes on the coastal footpath. West Cornwall has 172 beaches but Lelant's dune-backed mile of golden sand is amongst Cornwall's quietest.
  • An important part of contemporary art-making for over 120 years, West Cornwall is still home to a vibrant community of artists and craftspeople. Guests are encouraged to explore beyond Tate St Ives and visit the numerous workshops and galleries on offer.
  • Climb Trencrom Hill behind Lelant, one of the few places in Britain where the sun both rises from and sets into the sea. With the greatest concentration of ancient sites in Europe, Penwith Peninsular has a landscape little changed since the Bronze Age.
  • Spring brings a series of classical concerts at venues across the West Cornwall peninsular, performed by visitors to the renowned International Musicians Seminar. The IMS is based at Prussia Cove, a beautiful location steeped in smuggling and intrigue.
