Fuss-free, flexible stays at this early Georgian townhouse with delicious breakfasts, a sweet garden and much to discover on your doorstep

You can book one room, or the whole house for B&B, or self-cater - Gerry is friendly, easy-going and happy to fit around what you want. Homemade cake or a cream tea will welcome you in and breakfasts include home produced apple juice, home baked sourdough (perfected during lockdown) homemade marmalade and jams, sausages, bacon and eggs from local suppliers. There's plenty of space to sprawl on squishy sofas by the wood-burner in the sitting room while you plan a walk or cycle through the glorious Shropshire Hills.

Bedrooms upstairs are all a good size with sash windows, wonky floorboards and well-worn Oriental rugs, good artwork and comfortable Hypnos beds - its all very homely and cosy. Views are over the gardens or onto the high street. On sunny days you can sit on the deck overlooking the garden and there's a lawn for children to run about on.

Take a town or brewery tour and explore the history of this great little spot.

  • For a laid back morning we particularly enjoy a mooch around the shops at the top of town, calling into Simpsons or the Poetry Pharmacy to browse the books, cards and gifts, then checking into the Town Hall to see the latest exhibition or farmer's market.
  • Bishop’s Castle is on the Shropshire Way and just a few miles from Offa’s Dyke Path. If you fancy a challenge you could start working through the list of 50 great Shropshire Hills The Long Mynd, Stiperstones and the Clun valley are particular highlights.
  • Visit Ludlow for the market, the castle and to wander the streets of this beautiful town. The annual Ludlow Food Festival is a delight. We recommend wandering down to the river for a drink or lunch at C-Sons with perhaps a paddle by the weir.
  • One of the best food options in Bishop's Castle can be found at the Chai Shop - a tiny cafe serving authentic Indian food. Tahira, the owner and chef is an artist and her paintings and cards are on display. Don't miss the bhajis!
  • The town is full of artists with regular open studio events and classes available.. If you are interested in stained glass, lino printing, weaving, painting or upholstery just check with Gerry and she will point you in the right direction.
  • For ancient history and 360 degree views visit the bronze age stone circle at Mitchell's Fold or explore Bury Ditches iron age hill fort - both just a short drive from Bank House.
