Aspen Lodge - Self-catering house in Highland
Acharacle, PH36 4JG, Highland
Scotland,
Reino Unido
Your stone and timber lodge on the little-known Ardnamurchan Peninsula has a hillside setting and views from every window – use the telescope to spot red deer, golden eagles or the elusive Scottish wildcat if you're lucky.
Downstairs is cosy with an open fire and plenty of books; teenagers will like the snug upstairs with an Xbox and a popcorn machine. You’ll find a minibar and a welcome hamper which includes homemade jam, cake, wine and Scottish shortbread, and the kitchen is stocked with all you need for cooking. In summer, barbecue your supper in the garden and marvel at the stars on clear nights.
You can walk and cycle from the door, launch a kayak straight into the sea loch opposite the garden or set off with a picnic for a day on the beach, just a five-minute drive. There are other beaches and good restaurants – plus shops selling basics – within half an hour's drive, and you may spot minke whales, dolphins or puffins on summer boat tours of the loch.

Local points of interest from Samantha Davis:
Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Samantha Davis:
- There are a number of stunning beaches on the doorstep: Camas Nan Geall which is covered in golden glitter sand, Sanna Bay which looks like it should be in the Caribbean, and the Singing Sands which makes a noise or "sings" as you walk across it!
- Take a drive out to Ardnamurchan Point - the most westerly part of the British mainland. Climb the hundreds of steps up the lighthouse to look across many islands of the Inner Hebrides and watch seals, otters and dolphins play in the sea.
- Take the gorgeous Silver Circuit walk for some fantastic scenery ending up at a fairytale ruined castle on its own tidal island, covered in beachcombers' treasures. Ancient woodlands, wild peaks, sandy dunes, rocky shores - they're all ready to be explored
- Climb one of the mountains in the area - Ben Hiant is the closest (and a gentler hike) and it offers beautiful vistas of the peninsula. There are plenty of higher and more demanding hikes nearby for those who like a challenge!
- In season take a boat trip to the Treshnish Isles to see the puffins and Fingal's Cave (in the Telegraph's top 10 places to see for 2019), or jump on a ferry to Mull and eat fish & chips on the front in Tobermory (or Ballamory, as many think of it!)
- There are many tours that may be taken to see the peninsula from a particular perspective - whether guided nature walks, bicycle treks, kayaking adventures and photography trips. Alternatively hire your own bike or kayak and wander as the mood takes you
