The Old Wing - Self-catering house in Argyll & Bute
Drumhead, Darleith Rd, Cardross, G82 5EZ, Argyll & Bute
Scotland,
Reino Unido
Come for very peaceful countryside, wonderful walking (climb the hill for views over Loch Lomond), wild swimming in the loch and day trips to Edinburgh or Glasgow. You'll be delighted to return to such a pretty upstairs drawing room with the open fire merrily burning, lots of books and games and a lovely mix of interesting furniture and artwork collected over the years – it's all been so well put together.
The wonderfully free-standing kitchen is a joy to cook in with a big wooden table, old dresser with vintage china pieces, lots of space for prepping, cookery books to inspire and a door to the back courtyard where you may meet hens. An outdoor table faces west for beautiful sunsets with a view across the lawns to the distant mountains. In summer you can watch swallows swooping and hear cuckoos.
Simple, attractive bedrooms (one on the ground floor) have green views and plump pillows and duvets; bathrooms are pristine.

Amanda Murray:
- Helensburgh is a Victorian resort town and gateway to the beautiful west coast of Scotland: mountains on the horizon, sailing on the doorstep, a piece of world class architecture and the type of foodie scene you’d expect to find in the city.
- The River Clyde has a famous shipwreck ‘Sugar Boat' - visible from the shore. Originally known as the MV Captayannis, it was hit by a wind storm in 1974 when waiting to unload its cargo of raw sugar. A fabulous restaurant in the town is named after it.
- If you want to 'bag a munro' you can get up Ben Lomond and back in a day, the most southerly munro. Or walk a part of the John Muir Way, that runs coast to coast across central Scotland. Both with amazing views of the loch.
- The Hill House in Helensburgh is considered to be Charles Rennie Mackintosh's domestic masterpiece. It's currently inside a porous transparent box - part of a pioneering 10 year renovation of the exterior - with viewing walkways that run over the roof.
- Monty's Farm Park, part of Ardarden Estate just outside Cardross, has an indoor and outdoor play area, farm animals to feed, a cafe and a great farm shop.
- If golf is your thing, Cardross has a super golf course - or just over the hill is Cameron House on Loch Lomond with it's own golf course, spa with a jacuzzi on the roof and a michelin starred restaurant.
