Homely furnishings and 17th-century charm at this estate on the Severn, whose owners are mad about horses and give you fine home produce

Read guest comments

History buffs and nature lovers rejoice. You drive through lion-topped stone pillars to a house built in 1682 (then extended) that stands in 800 acres enfolded by the river Severn. Charming Ros and Edward are down-to-earth and hands-on: eggs, bacon, ham, vegetables, and logs, all come from the estate. Flop in front of a huge fire in the drawing room, homely with family antiques, big rug, magazines strewn on large tables. Peaceful bedrooms are large and light with pocket-sprung memory mattresses and snazzy upmarket bathrooms. Walk, fish, ride (there's a livery stable on site) and lap up the views – they're sublime.

"One of the best B&Bs we have stayed in. The hosts couldn't have been more charming and helpful and our room was beautiful and spotlessly clean. Edward's knowledge of the local history was very impressive and he pointed us in the direction of a beautiful church in Shrewsbury and a great local wine merchant. Local ordinance survey maps are on offer for walking, which were almost a necessity after the amazing breakfast - I loved the coconut and ginger porridge. All in all a truly wonderful and relaxing place to stay with great hosts and wonderful countryside to explore."

"We only stayed two nights but would be very happy to have stayed longer. The owners were charming, very sociable and informative and felt like the friends that one would choose. Their animals are equally friendly and, after an excellent dinner on the second evening, to walk outside on a clear and starry night and hear three owls staking their individual territorial claims was a memory to cherish. Lovely house and rooms and beautiful surroundings. Do ask Ros for her 'special' porridge."

"The Isle just does it right. Their natural friendliness makes them great hosts. They have thought of everything,-extremely comfortable room, well stocked bathroom, cool milk for tea in room, dinner prepared for us from their own produce hit the spot perfectly, lovely garden to wander in, very comfortable bed and wonderful night's sleep. Great value, great company and great hosts. No we are not old friends but I will definitely be making this our overnight stop from Holyhead to Kent. I have never given a perfect score before but I cannot think of anything that was not perfect., thanks"

"Much more than a B&B, an 800 acre haven of walking, swimming and rowing... Well you need to do something to work off the wonderful breakfasts, which they cook just the way you like it. Like the hosts of a country house party Ros and Edward have got the balance right with all the facilities and none of the pretence, meaning you can properly relax! Truly delightful"

"We had a wonderful night at The Isle, we only wish we could have stayed longer. Edward was incredibly kind and generous with his time, even buying us some cakes at a charity event on the estate for our journey home (this was after I had accidentally broken an ornament in our room!). We stayed in the Blue and White Room which was beautiful ad very well appointed. The bathroom was lovely and very light and airy. We were given coffee by the pool when we first arrived and generally spoilt. Breakfast was delicious, with a huge range to choose from. The estate is beautiful and well worth exploring."

"This is the second time we have stayed at the Isles and I am somewhat loathe to give a positive review as there might not be any rooms available next time we want stay! Edward and Ros are fantastic hosts and make you feel so very welcome. The rooms are delightful with so many extras to make your stay a good one. The breakfasts are great and use delicious local produce. If you stay at the Isles you will not be disappointed ."

"Yet again Sawday's came up trumps. I had an extremely pleasant couple of nights' stay. The house has real character, the room was large and extremely comfortable, and my hosts could not have been more warm, welcoming, charming and accommodating. Both dinner and breakfasts were excellent, expertly prepared from home grown and local ingredients. I highly recommend the Isle Estate and look forward to staying again."

"Well worth a visit. Very friendly and hospitable owners. Excellent breakfast. My only regret was that we only stayed one night. "

"Really a great place to relax and unwind, with such hospitable owners, they made us feel really welcome and a great breakfast from local suppliers that you will need to then explore the grounds to walk off the calories! Thoroughly recommended."

"After a week's stay I didn't want to leave, having become used to sleeping in a fantastically comfortable bed in the beautiful blue and white bedroom, watching spotted woodpeckers on the bird-feeders and eating delicious breakfasts and evening meals. Ros and Edward were very kind and considerate and gave my mother and myself a warm and friendly welcome. "

"Luxurious room with great attention to detail, lovely old house and the run of the 800 acre peaceful estate. Add to this great food served in a panelled dining room and generous and genuine hospitality for an unbeatable combination. Deeply relaxing and great value. Highly recommended."

"A unique combination of outstanding food - grown mainly on the spot, historically interesting buildings and location, delightful 'blue & white' bedroom, sitting room and dining rooms and a variety of long and short walks on the Estate next to the River Severn. All is masterminded in a relaxed manner by Ros and Edward. This is a treat not to missed. "

"'Fairest Isle' seems an apt quote! Lovely one-night stopover in very attractive house staying in comfy, plush twin room with poetic garden views. An isle of tranquility but very near to Shrewsbury and lots of Shropshire beauty spots. Charming hosts gave tour of eclectic history of the place (from AngloSaxon mound to 17th century red brick) and went the extra mile to help my mother and I get the most from our short stay (and negotiate the one ways to Shrewsbury old town parking). Recommend the duck egg breakfast!"
