A very special place. Sweep under the carriage arch and you enter a cobbled courtyard. There's a tithe-barn sitting room which is an extension of the restaurant, then the Coach House Grill, a restored skittle alley – a brilliant space for board games, reading and relaxing (plus big group bookings and special events).

As for the main house, weave along ancient passageways and find stone walls, rugs on wood floors, crackling log fires and a low-ceilinged bar for a pint. Delicious food flies from the kitchen, so good it tastes home-cooked. Bedrooms (above and beside the inn) are the best, some smaller, others huge with claw-foot baths, walk-in showers and modern four-posters, all with clouds of Siberian goose down and Bramley soaps and lotions. Add thoughtful staff to the mix and you will be happy.

Breakfast is a feast and includes a bloody Mary which you can construct yourself. Explore the village, especially the church.

"Friendly staff and very helpful. Food was very good and there’s a nice wine selection. Bathrooms were great with lovely smelly products. Would return. "

"I've enjoyed two Sunday lunches at The Talbot Inn so much that I felt I had to leave a review. The Talbot is one of the cosiest yet most stylish pubs I know - and its beautiful aesthetic is matched by the warmth of its friendly and thoughtful staff and by its fantastic food. We last arrived on a chilly December day and were immediately seated next to a roaring fire and handed delicious glasses of the red wine that had been recommended. I've eaten beef and turbot there, both perfectly done and mouthwatering to remember. We're planning to stay overnight next time we go, to fully enjoy it!"
