These gorgeous stone barns were once crumbling, now they're home to one of the loveliest hotels in the north. You can dine outdoors even in winter, under an awning with a huge firepit and heaters, in summer, life spills onto the courtyard for lunch in the sun, but step through the arched glass doors and find a spectacular restaurant open to the rafters. There's a funky bar for cocktails, an open fire, a sitting room for guests that opens onto a terrace. Bedrooms are just as good, with fine fabrics, super-comfy beds and robes, five have their own terrace and some have hot tubs.
Elsewhere, you'll find a spa with treatment rooms, a kitchen garden where you can get married, and beautiful rooms in the renovated farmhouse. Good food waits, some home-grown, much from Yorkshire, all tasty.
Breakfast is big and the Dales wait to the west, the Moors to the east for bracing walks. Don't miss The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, a jewel.

- There is a 3km route around the estate which takes you down through the woodland, past a stream (which only runs when it rains), over a bridge, with magical views past fields of sheep across the Cleveland hills.
- This area has one of the lowest rainfalls in the country, situated in the Vale of Mowbray between the Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire Moors which catch most of the rain, so you may well be lucky with the sunshine. If so why not head out into the Dales.
- We have just completed works on The Kitchen Garden. We now grow seasonal produce and provide a beautiful protected space to wander. The Kitchen Garden now serves as a food source for The Coach House Restaurant.
- We hold several events across the estate on a weekly basis, from cookery school, design and art workshops, open air theatre and cinema to wine dinners. Our annual events have become renowned for their individuality and creativity.
- Nearby Richmond has a Norman Castle and keep as well as a Georgian market town. It is the oldest 'Richmond' in the world and all others are named after this one. The Georgian theatre is also the oldest working theatre in the country.
- The Tack Room is our favourite bedroom. It comes with your own woodburning stove, white timber panelling, a comfy linen sofa to curl up in, an enormous bathroom with mismatched blue & white tiles and a freestanding bath to sink into.
