Dunskey Estate - Saltwater Chronicles - Self-catering lodge in Dumfries & Galloway
Portpatrick, DG9 8TJ, Dumfries & Galloway
Scotland,
Reino Unido
This nicely renovated 1850 lodge perched on the clifftop is an easy stroll to a deserted beach with rugged coastal paths reaching in both directions. Secluded and private, it is one of a handful on a nature-filled 2000-acre estate where you can get stuck into many activities – or retreat down woodland paths.
A plain exterior opens to a colourful maximalist style: opulent beds, cushions and throws, a mix of antique and new furniture. You get a neat open-plan kitchen, books to browse, a TV for rainy days. In balmier times eat supper on the deck with nothing but sea views to charm your senses. If you fancy a night off, homemade frozen meals prepared by the estate chefs can be arranged.
Row on the lochs, wander the botanic gardens, get lost in the maze then return for a barbecue around the fire pit and a late-night soak in the outdoor bath as stars appear.

- Perched atop the Estate's fairy glen, where bluebells cloak the ground like scented eiderdown, and the Scottish cragged coastline soars into the wide open skies, this maximalist lodge may awaken you to your own soulful chronicles.
- Begin the journey via a secluded, tree-lined path to the edge of the beach, whereupon an acre of enclosed wild garden and woodland will greet you. Manicured lawn and matured woodland are all yours relish, including a handwoven hammock under beech tree.
- The piece de resistance is the spectacular and lighted private dock that nestles into the hillside, casting a magnificent view of the wild sea, endless sunsets, and the forever green rolling hills.
- Two secluded beaches are steps away from this lodge. Port Mora, or Sandeel Bay, features a tranquil cove with sandy beach and a murmuring waterfall. At low tide, venture far out on the sand and discover aquatic life, including urchins, eels, and starfish.
- To the west, Port Kale has two sheltered pebble beaches and small rock formations, where hours can be spent stone-skipping, clambering and collecting seaglass. Our resident seal, whose full name is Tidal Serge the Dunskey Seal of Approval bobs about.
- When the tide is out, be sure to wade to the rocks and harvest pepperdulse seaweed, which tastes like oceanic truffles!
