The Old Post Office - Self-catering house in Powys
Montgomery, SY15 6PH, Powys
Wales,
Reino Unido
For a small border town Montgomery packs a punch. It's a pretty place, bustling with Georgian buildings, a castle with ruined battlements from which you can admire the glorious mid-Wales views, a museum so you can delve into its history, a literary and walking festival, a street fair in July and a brilliant farmers' market every Thursday and Saturday morning. Your downstairs living room and kitchen overlook the market hall and square so you'll feel very much in the thick of things.
On rainy days you'll find a Smart TV and maps and guides so you can plan your next adventure while sitting by the wood-burner - this will be a very happy place to be whatever the weather. The kitchen has sleek stone worktops and a good prepping island so everyone can get involved. You are left Welsh cakes and pastries and Coco Pzazz chocolate.
If you're feeling really lazy then in-house catering can be arranged or you can nip to The Checkers restaurant for excellent food.

Local points of interest from Gerry Barwell:
Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Gerry Barwell:
- Take the steep but short walk up to Montgomery Castle to enjoy brilliant views of the town below and the Camlad Valley - then take the footpath opposite to walk up to the county war memorial and views of the Shropshire hills and Snowdownia - breathtaking!
- it might be a small town but Montgomery has some great places to shop. Don't miss Bunners for everything you never knew you needed (cookshop/ ironmongery). The Old Post Office was once the Bunners motor and cycle shop c. 1900.
- Pick up the excellent walking and cycling guides produced locally (we have most of these in the house but Bunners should have them all), Our favourite walks take you out to Offa's Dyke & beyond to walk along the river valley - or up the Iron Age hill fort
- We love a steam railway and the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway is just a short drive away. You can combine your trip with afternoon tea or a fish and chip supper as you chug through the mid Wales scenery.
- For a special meal out we highly recommend booking a table at the Checkers - just across the market square where the food is prepared by Andrew and Rachel Birch. They are open for lunch from Thursday to Sunday and for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday.
- You can't miss the Shropshire Hills AONB. The Stiperstones and the Long Mynd are particular highlights although our favourite hill is Corndon which dominates the skyline to the east of Montgomery. It's steep but exhilarating.
