Potter through the streets; spend your days gallery hopping. Visit William the Conqueror's tomb in the inimitable Abbaye aux Hommes. There are boutiques and pretty shops aplenty, and restaurants and cafés to flop into after a day on your feet - brave diners can sample the signature dish of Tripes à la mode de Caen!
Jump into the car for 20 minutes and delve into WW2 history with cemeteries and souvenirs. Evenings can be spent sprawled back home - leaf through one of the books or gather around a board game - there is a stack to choose from.

- The ferry port’s close and Caen’s a great little city to explore on foot or on a hired bicycle so forget the car every thing is within easy reach. The bustling Friday market at rue Pémagnie and place Saint Sauveur full of many local artisan producers.
- Within easy reach by car discover the Normandy coast and its numerous nautical activities, and typical villages explore the Pays D’Auge, Lion-sur-Mer, Cabourg, Deauville, Trouville, and the landing beaches especially Omaha with its museum
- For somewhat further away destinations I would highly recommend Granville and the island of Chaussey, Mont St-Michel, for day trips. Saint Malo or Concale with a seafood lunch would also be high on my « must visit » list
- Bayeux, a charming town where you can discover the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Bayeux Tapestry… is only 30 minutes away by car.
- Of many other ideas and especially for visitors who love gardens very high on my priority list would be a visit to the Sir Edwin Lutyens designed house and gardens high on the cliffs gently sloping down to the sea at Varengeville-sur-Mer. Bois Des Moutiers
- Apart from cycling town center sports facilities include: boating on the river Orne,swimming, ice skating ,tennis. For the very young there is a planted, protected small park and play area just across the street.
