Civilised and convivial, the Cavendish is a joy, offering a drink on arrival and a complimentary bar in the evening. Set back from the bustle of Cannes, this splendid rebirth of a Napoleon III mansion displays Madame Welter's talents. Subtle modern comforts and splendid rooms, some with a balcony or terrace, are the frame. Sensuous, exuberant, almost edible choices of fabric and colour are the order of the day.

Quirky old-fashioned charm enfolds it all. It's like being a guest in the grand house of a grand homme, such as its namesake, Lord Cavendish. How attentive to offer leaf teas for breakfast, how attractive to dress the curvy Carrara marble staircase with candles at dusk, how delightful to slip between lavender-scented sheets at night.

Freshly baked croissants, cakes and crumbles, homemade jams and cheerful staff make mornings easy, especially if you're headed to one of the events at the Festival Hall, ten minutes away.
