La Valdesa - Self-catering house in Cádiz
La Valdesa, 11150 Abejaruco, Cádiz
Andalusia,
España
The road snakes between the hills of Vejer and Abejaruco, then you climb a steep and windy track for a thrilling adventure. You arrive to a gleaming modern, John Pawson inspired house surrounded by birdsong and semi-wild land – you'll not want to leave! Inside is a 60 sq.m open space in which living room and kitchen blend seamlessly, huge glass doors frame the garden, sleek sofas ask to be lounged on, straw sunhats decorate a wall, and all is white, white, white. Bedrooms lie in each wing of the 'H'-shaped structure: at one end, two twin rooms; at the other, a master bedroom. Bathrooms are large, marbled and spoiling. All feels generous, spacious, crisply modern, with ceilings forming steep sloping triangles. Outside are wild olive trees, almonds and figs, a terrace surrounded by herbs and small pomegranates in pots, and a vegetable garden in the lower field – pick your own peppers, tomatoes, oranges, lemons. Or visit Vejer with its shops, market and delectable tapas. The caretaker and his wife who farm nearby take good care of house, garden and pool.

Local points of interest from Andrew Platt:
Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Andrew Platt:
- The closest beach (15 mins) is an absolute cracker (Zahora, near Cape Trafalgar), but it is mile upon mile of unspoilt sandy beaches from Cadiz down to Tarifa, many of them excellent for surfing.
- 10 mins to the hilltop village of Vejer (fabulous restaurants, bars, galleries, jazz, and flamenco); 40 mins to Cadiz (history, and Carnival in February); 1 hour to Jerez (bodegas and Spring Fair in May); and 30 minutes to Tarifa (and the boat to Tangiers)
- Watch the whales in the Strait (trips from Barbate and Tarifa) or take a private boat to watch the Almadraba (capture of the tuna).
- Stunning birdwatching on what is one of Europe's main migratory routes. Just bring your binoculars and start walking, or we can put you in touch with a guide. Eagles, harriers, vultures, little bustards, black-shouldered kites, hoopoes, bea-eaters, etc.. .
- Walks and bikerides galore (right from your doorstep). Take the path down to the Roman aqueduct (still in use), or to the natural spring to fill your bottles, and all this through oak, olive, and orange trees.
- Take an evening horse ride through the pine forest, canter in the surf, drink a cold fino at the beach bar, and back to the stables before lights-out....what better way to finish the day!
