A hammock by the pool, dinner under the stars, Andalucian nature (wild boar, birds, olives) all around. Chatty English hosts charm all

It's off a scenic back road, deep in a river valley carved out of the rugged Subbética mountains. When Claire and Tim strayed here fifteen years ago, they fell for a ruined olive farm and rolled up their sleeves: now the big airy house gleams with white walls, hand-painted tiles and sensational pool terrace. Solar panels, olive-fuelled biomass: it's as eco-friendly as it is luxurious; the nearest neighbours are wild boar and birds. Best is the terrace: hammock slung under shady thatch by the pool, tables for dinner under the stars. Each air-conditioned bedroom – huge beds, bright cushions, lamps, rain-head showers, underfloor heating – looks upon a stubbled swathe of olives and jagged mountains: Membrillo wins the sunset prize, Olivo has a terrace. Over Claire's home cooking or a glass of wine in the fire-warmed lounge, swap travel tales and ask Tim about the web of hiking trails. You're an easy bike ride on a Vía Verde to one of Andalucia's famed white villages, just north of clifftop Priego de Córdoba and midway between Granada and Cordoba, each an hour's drive. Fancy-free and first class.

Tim & Claire Murray Walker:

  • Interesting local Fiestas & Festivals including Zuheros Cheese Fair (mid/late Sep) and Toro de Cuerda "bull running" in Carcabuey (late Aug/early Sep). Both are very authentic/local in flavour and set in picturesque "pueblos blancos" (white villages).
  • Our local town, Priego de Cordoba (15 minutes by car) is surely one of Spain's hidden gems. Discover Baroque churches, shady plazas and lose yourself wandering the maze of narrow cobbled streets of the cliff-top old town, festooned with geraniums.
  • The ideal base for exploring untouched white villages (Zuheros etc) and walking or mountain biking in the Sierra Subbetica park. We have a good range of self-guide hiking routes on a navigation app (hiking & biking) for you to explore the countryside.
  • After a day's exploring, cool off with a quick dip in the pool, a swing in the hammock or G&T out on the terrace at sunset. Then tuck in to a tasty home-cooked evening meal under the stars, a bottle of local wine and the sound of the "campo" at night.
  • What makes a place "special" these days? For us, it's not the 5* luxury trimmings or white glove pampering. It is all about relaxed, personal service; inside-track experiences and the ability to unwind and disconnect in a beautiful, natural setting.
  • Stunning views of ancient olive groves and craggy hills from every window. This river valley has a feeling of peace and remoteness and yet we're only an hour's drive from Cordoba and Granada for easy day trips to the Mezquita and Alhambra.

Guest feedback
"We just stayed here last week and it was fabulous! We had glorious sunny days but as soon as the sun goes down it goes quite cool and so it was fantastic to have heating in the bedrooms which was not the usual plug in radiator - so unusual for southern spain! We have stayed in lots of rural places in Spain and more often than not out of the main season, so to us heating is a must! The beds were large and luxurious, the views from the casa absolutely gorgeous, and they benefit from facing west which means you get the last rays of the sun on the terrace in Winter - gorgeous. The food was great, loved the short hike we did and the wine-tasting - a great idea to get guests' feedback! We REALLY rated this place and can't wait to go back! It is our ideal place to stay in Spain - just what you hope for of Rural Andalusia!"
