At the end of a narrow track arrive to a farmhouse, so discreet that it feels part of the sierra. Dutch owners Willem and Richard have blended rustic charm and modern comforts effortlessly, creating their own ‘eco-chic’ paradise within the remote valley ringed by mountains.

Sustainability is the order of the day here, with solar-powered electricity, water recycling and irrigation systems in place. La Ruina and the rooms in the old stables (Los Establos) are cosy, calm and simple with gorgeous bathrooms. Glamp it up in La Jaima, a structure tried and tested by nomadic tribes for two millennia – huge, theatrical and great fun.

Start the day with embutidos (cold cuts), cereals, juices and locally made breads; head out to explore the dozens of unsigned and unmapped paths. Return for a dip in the magnificent pool, and despite the remoteness, restaurants are minutes away too. The night skies are the clearest you’re ever likely to see.

"If you are looking for Paradise then at Refugio Marnes you are almost there. We spent 4 days at R.M. with our 3 Dogs plus our African Grey Parrot and we enjoyed every Minute. "Can't rate this B&B highly enough - AMAZING is the only word for it. Everything was fabulous and we had an excellent 8 nights here. We will certainly return if we are in the area again. It was prefectly clean, we were warmly welcomed, the pool was fantastic, it was peaceful and beautiful. The area is tranquil and the hosts are thoughtful and have renovated this property to a high standard without losing the feel of the Spanish finca, adding touches of chic here and there. We would recommend everyone to stay here. You don't have to love walking either, as there are plenty of short walks to do, if you don't want to go hiking. Also nearby the Iris Garden (10mins by foot) in May/June is worth a visit. The eco approach that Willhem & Richard take is carefully thought out, and they have done most of the work themselves. Their land/garden is superb. Its just FANTASTIC. Please go and stay here, and pass on our warmest regards. Jane & Beat Oberholzer"
