Wend your way down steep paths to Durgan beach, explore the magic of Charles’s wonderful garden and feast on Caroline’s super breakfasts

Read guest comments

Glendurgan has been in Charles Fox's family for over 200 years. It’s a magical, exotic and wooded place, and there’s a sense of discovery as you set off down steep paths to Durgan beach. Come in spring for the mass of magnolias, bluebells and primroses. While summer, to quote Charles’s excellent book, “breaks in a wave of whiteness, with eucryphia, hoheria, myrtus and that ‘bombe Alaska’ of rhododendrons, ‘Polar Bear’, and autumn is awash with bulbs – amaryllis, colchicum, crinum and nerine.” In the winter this is still an important garden with its collection of fine trees, and, even in the wildest weather, it's a deeply romantic place to be.

Charles’s paintings of plants and trees line the stairwell up to bedrooms with sensational Helford river views; Violet and Magenta are as your Edwardian aunt would have liked - no TV but a grand piano, harp, and books to browse. Caroline trained as a cook and her breakfasts are delicious with homemade bread, jams and marmalade and locally produced eggs and bacon.

Charles, garden designer and leader of tours, has lots of tips about what to visit and where to eat. Falmouth is just 15 minutes, so if you're visiting the university it's easy to come back to this gracious home.

"Staying at Glendurgan, with its timeless elegance and beautiful garden, was made even more special by our hosts, Caroline and Charles, whose generous and faultless hospitality made our stay so wonderful. Glendurgan is, quite simply, a haven of peace and tranquility. "

"Wonderful visit. Highly recommended for hospitality, comfort and location. Charles and Caroline were extremely gracious. They picked us up/dropped us off at the train station. Waking up to view Glendurgan Garden from our room was a pleasure- then being able to walk in it before visitors arrived. We were car-less, but could walk to Helford to pub for dinner. Bus stop very close to house. Trebah garden just down the road and not to be missed. Great breakfast. Felt like home. Special experience. "

"We had a wonderful stay with Caroline & Charles at Glendurgan. Our hosts did everything possible to make our visit comfortable; we had wet walking boots upon arrival which were dried out in the boot room overnight. We were treated to a welcome cup of tea with home made cake, sitting in the lounge of the beautiful & historic house, overlooking the fabulous garden . Above & beyond the call of duty, two evenings running, Caroline gave us a lift to & picked us up from the nearby pub on the Helford river. Also, a delicious breakfast was served each day. ideal if you are walking the coast path. "

"Caroline is a warm and welcoming host. Breakfast was delicious and there were lots of lovely touches, like our beds being turned down at night. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful setting on the Helford River. We hope to return to see the gardens in another season - and be spoilt again."

"It's my second stay at Glendurgan and I love it. Caroline and Charles are perfect hosts and I feel totally welcome. The two rooms, each with own bathroom are very comfortable, the house and the garden are amazing. From there I can perfectly explore Cornwall, the wonderful beaches and great gardens. "

"The perfect starting point for a tour of Cornwall's famous gardens! Charles set the scene and provided answers to even the most challenging of gardening questions. His tour of the garden was a high point of our stay only matched by the quality of the dinner Caroline had prepared for us. The Foxes are truly excellent hosts and made us feel at home in that fantastic house."

"If you are planning a holiday in Cornwall the only place to stay for me would be Glendurgan. The home of Charles and Caroline Fox. Their wonderful home surrounded by the most stunning garden with fantastic views and their amazing hospitality cannot be bettered in any home in the country. I just loved every minute. This was my second visit and looking forward to the next?"

"This is the most enchanting house and garden , we stayed for two nights and wished we could have stayed for a week. We were totally spoilt and came away thinking that one never needs to go abroad again when you have gardens to explore like Glendurgan. Incredibly warm and interesting hosts and they went out of their way to make our time very special. We are going to recommend all our friends to stay at Glendurgan."

"Glendurgan is perfect. Every carefully planned detail - trees, books, fabrics, art, colours, sea views, eggs, china, flowers - provided nourishment for a starved soul and tired body. A Sense of Place. "

"Wonderful welcome (tea and cake) from Caroline, continuing engaging and generous hospitality, great breakfast and conversation with Caroline and Charles, very comfortable bedroom and all of the time living with history, books, paintings, views to the Helford River and of course the garden. Dinner booked by Caroline in Maenporth, followed by a walk in the garden on midsummer's evening (significant for us Swedes! ). A perfect short break within the Glendurgan estate and garden with many thanks to the Fox family for their generous hospitality, Caroline and Charles! 21/22 June 2016."

"What a pleasure to wake up each morning to a long view of the Glendurgan garden down to the sea. Caroline's varied breakfasts started the day, along with maps and ideas for more garden visits and dinner reservations as needed in the evening. Our room and bath were spacious, comfortable, very clean, with modern amenities in an historical house full of Charles' paintings and fresh flowers. We walked the garden often and also used the National Trust tea room for lunch or tea. Although we had already planned our Cornwall trip, it was obvious that Charles would have been an excellent guide."

"Charming & hospitable host & hostess - everything presented to the highest standard with great attention to detail in an exceptionally beautiful setting. Delicious home-made food was an added pleasure, not to mention Caroline's delicious cake on the terrace on arrival - a chance to admire the glorious view."

"A wonderful place to stay. The house and hospitality are exactly as described, and a real treat. We had the large bedroom with the bay window shown in the photo, with a view down the garden to the estuary: single beds but very comfortable & with hot water bottles provided! The gardens were magical, esp after visitors had left: reds and pinks and yellows, soft grass, bumblebees and birdsong. Walk along the coastal path in the sunshine. Take the ferry to the pub in Helford Village. Well done, Charles and Caroline. Very highly recommended."

"This stay was the highlight of my trip to Cornwall. A warm welcome from Caroline and Charles followed by tea and cake accompanied by live harp music - a very special start to my stay. The room was beautiful with views across the garden and down to the river with fresh cosmos flowers in a vase and an elegant tea tray. All of this plus a yummy breakfast would have kept me smiling but this is much more than a B&B. The Fox's obvious passion for the place and knowledge of their fascinating family who planted the gardens made it very hard to leave! "

"Grateful. We were just so grateful about Caroline's warm welcome while we - a family with three children - stood soaking wet in front of the door. Caroline offered a cup of tea in her lovely parlour and put all our clothes into the dryer. Her restaurant recommendation for dinner was perfect, the English breakfast in the next morning, as well. We will always remember this beautiful place with its warmheated owners - THANK YOU so much for taking care of us! Hope you liked the Austrian wine ;-) kindest regards, Inge & Stephan "

"A rare and special place. Charles and Caroline's kind thoughtfulness and care for their guests is exceptional. To give just one example, I mentioned early on I was keen to see the rare rhododendron "Polar Bear" in flower, then completely forgot about it, but there it was on the breakfast table on our last morning, Charles had remembered and went to pick it for us specially. A wonderful few days, I will gladly return. Shipwright Arms just across the river also really good, peaceful, unhurried, and delicious food."

"This delightful and elegant house is everything we expect of a 'Sawday House'. Charming and welcoming host and hostess, beautifully appointed and comfortable bedroom with stunning garden and river views, real linen pillowslips, bliss, fab LONG bath (no knees under the chin!) lashings of hot water, Crabtree and Evelyn bubbles etc, big bath towels, face flannels, proper hand towels; delicious and imaginative cooking, Caroline is a trained and talented cook, home made bread and preserves, fresh flowers everywhere. This is the gold standard all Sawday houses should aspire to."

"We saw in the New Year at dreamy Glendurgan and the whole experience was delightful, especially as, being off-season, we had the remarkable gardens to ourselves. This is a comfy family home in the best English country house tradition and I thoroughly endorse previous comments about talented and generous hosts Caroline and Charles. They live in a beautiful place and are happy to share it, so sign up and wind down...!"

"A wonderful stay in a comfortable and gracious house set in spectacular gardens. Caroline and Charles Fox could not have been more welcoming and accommodating. We had an absolutely delicious dinner (accompanied by generous amounts of wine) cooked by the very accomplished Caroline.. All in all, a very special place at a more than reasonable price."

"Splendid! Caroline was a wonderful host, ensuring we had a lovely time during our stay. The house itself was enchanting. The atmosphere and furnishing of the rooms was almost fictional - it felt like we were living inside a book! Our nights were so comfortable - the beds, eiderdowns and pillows were all extraordinary. The gardens were stunning, and we had them all to ourselves after closing time! Caroline went out of her way to make sure my daughter (who has a dairy allergy) got a proper breakfast that she thoroughly enjoyed. Breakfast also included freshly picked strawberries from the garden."

"Thumbs up is an understatement for Charles' and Caroline's magical residence. Two hands raised to the skies is closer to how we would rate their home. Our charming room had a stupendous view of the Helford River at the bottom of their valley. Charles led us to three of the most famous Fox gardens and Caroline planned each of our four day stay with restaurant recommendations in St Ives and other stunning spots in the area. Breakfast was a family affair where we met children and friends. We have never experienced a stay in the UK which provided us with such a magnificent experience. A must go!"
