30 South Mill Lane - Self-catering cottage in Dorset
30 South Mill Lane, Bridport, DT6 3PN, Dorset
England,
Royaume-Uni
Wander through to the back, via a fascinating outhouse, to a garden swathed in clematis and wisteria. Grassy paths still divide the long rambling gardens where the rope-workers applied their skills... this row of Victorian cottages has barely changed in 100 years.
Hop on the bus or walk twenty minutes across the fields to West Bay for outstanding beaches towered over by majestic cliffs. Here you can swim, boat, kayak and go coasteering – there’s plenty of space and children will love the special play parks in summer.
Step out the front for the river and sandy paths down to the centre of town. Buy Dorset-fresh produce from three weekly markets, rest in Buckydoo Square and watch life flow by, or wind up having lunch at The Bull. Return to sunny bedrooms and the perfect teenage dorm in the loft.

Local points of interest from Belinda Richardson:

Belinda Richardson:
- Colourful Bridport is right on the doorstep with its regular street markets, festivals, art deco cinema, bookshops, museum, arts centre and theatre. Take a seat in Bucky Doo (the town square) and let it all wash over you .
- A mile's amble across the meadows leads to the working harbour of West Bay. Buy scallops fresh from the trawler, hire fishing boats and kayaks or book up for some coasteering, kite surfing and scuba diving. There's a well-kept links course for golfers too.
- Walkers, cyclists and twitchers can follow the coastal path up and down cliffs towards Lyme (you'll need deep breaths to get up Golden Cap). Or fossil hunt your way along the shore towards the pebbly paradise of Chesil Beach, passing through Abbotsbury.
- Ginger muffin enthusiasts should not miss Leaker's Bakery, a Bridport institutuion. Bella's deli and takeaway is also good for big home-made cakes, as is Sladers Yard, an art gallery in West Bay that has occasional music and live poetry too.
- Rachel's is the pick of the myriad kiosks selling fish and chips in West Bay. The breezy, easy going Watch House Cafe, bang on the beach is considered less of a scrum than it's nearby sister, The Hive Beach, and it does good breakfasts too. Dogs welcome.
- Family-owned Palmer's Brewery is a short stumble across South Street with guided tours that take you round historic brewery buildings and cover the whole brewing process. Tastings are a welcome part of the tour and takeaway draught beer is available.
