Imperious old coaching inn lost in deep country with a river to fish, five-mile views, delicious rooms and some very tasty food

Read guest comments

It is almost impossible to imagine a day when a better inn will grace the English landscape. Everything here is perfect. The inn sits just above the river Hodder, and doors in the bar lead onto a terrace where guests can enjoy five-mile views across parkland to rising fells. Inside, fires roar, newspapers wait, there are beams, sofas, maps and copies of Wisden. Bedrooms, some in the Coach House, are exemplary and come with real luxury, perhaps a peat fire, a lavish four-poster, a fabulous Victorian power shower. All have beautiful fabrics, top linen and gadgets galore; many have the marvellous view – you can fall asleep to the sound of the river. There are bar meals for those who want to watch their weight (the Whitewell fish pie is rightly famous) or a restaurant for splendid food, so dig into seared scallops, Bowland lamb, a plate of local cheese (the Queen once popped in for lunch). Elsewhere, a wine shop in reception, seven miles of private fishing and countryside as good as any in the land. Dogs and children are very welcome. Magnificent.

Guest feedback
"I had heard about the Inn at Whitewell years ago, and always wanted to visit it. We came to celebrate our 35th Wedding Anniversary for a weekend here - it was fabulous! The room was in an annexe, "the Coach House", and it was superb - large, with a very comfortable bed, an extra kitchen and a separate en suite bathroom, with a magnificent Victorian bath and shower and a "his and hers" pair of basins. We eat in the bar in the Friday night and in the dining room on the Saturady night. The food was excellent - the Lonk lamb is to die for, and the Blond Witch ale is very moreish. The Trough of Bowland is one of England's best kept secrets, and it is glorious - we would love to have explored more. We cannot wait to go back, but perhaps will not do so, as we do not want to spoil our memories of a perfect stay!"
