A lodge house in magnificent gardens (which are all yours when visitors leave). A sweet retreat for anyone, but gardeners will adore it

Read guest comments

Since 1561, generations of Cholmeleys have managed the Easton estate in the rolling countryside of the Lincolnshire/Rutland borders, and in 2001 work began to restore the 12 acres of 'lost' gardens which originally surrounded the manor house. You stay in the lodge: a light, bright and peaceful space with good furniture, pictures and books, a downstairs sitting room painted cornflower blue and a well-planned kitchen; you'll feel very happy staying indoors, perhaps just reading or recharging your batteries, but garden lovers will be too excited to stay put - as evening falls and the visitors leave, the gardens are yours to wander at will. Find walled gardens in the Tudor style, a turf maze, a yew tunnel and grand trees. Return to sleep peacefully in a restful, view-filled bedroom up a narrow spiral staircase, splash about happily in a roomy bathroom with wainscoted walls. You're just under one miles from the A1 (depending on the wind direction you may hear a slight hum in the gardens) but all is quiet and rural-feeling inside. Walk the three miles to the estate pub for lunch or supper, amble around Rutland Water for birdwatching. Lovely.

"I wish we could keep it as a hidden secret! This was the most wonderful holiday. My husband and I stayed for the Christmas holidays in 2016. The cottage was just beautiful as in the pictures cozy and modern and the welcome pack made us so happy! The gardens are lovely and we couldn't ask for more. We had a wonderful relaxing time with our puppy. The experience was perfect from booking to arriving. We totality reccomend it!"

"Easton Gatehouse Lodge is comfortable, warm and pleasantly appointed. It is ideal for a couple and a dog. We visited early December to view the gardens, talk to the gardener about sweet pea sowing and growing on. Also to observe ideas that we could maybe incorporate in our own half acre garden. There are lovely walks surrounding the area and plenty of Inns for lunch and/or supper. We and our dog were made welcome wherever we ate. Stamford, Oakham and other towns are well worth visiting. Penny and myself would strongly recommend a stay at The Gatehouse Lodge."

"We were welcomed very warmly and given a tour of the cottage. The cottage had an instruction folder for all of the appliances. A perfect combination of cosiness and modern features makes this cottage a real gem. Having the gardens all to ourselves was an absolute delight. We had the best tea and scones at the tea room. Everyone at the garden were warm and friendly. The location is fantastic as it is close to Belton House and Burghley House. We will definately be visiting again."

"The gatehouse was a delightful place for two. Impeccable attention to detail, couldn't fault. We loved having the grounds to wander round when not open to the public, they have been beautifully restored ....a labour of love!"

"This 2 night stay was a birthday present for myself and my other half. We were very impressed with this small but beautiful gatehouse, from the lovely, comfortable bed and the spotlessly clean bathroom to the well equipped kitchen. Not to mention the wine, chocolate cake, sloe gin, bread etc etc that were there for us to enjoy. It was lovely to have the gardens to ourselves and have a chat to the gardeners. I can highly recommend a stay here - you will not be disappointed. Our only low spot was the weather, sadly nothing we could do about that."

"The lodge is absolutely beautiful and the out of hours access to the gardens was a real treat. We were beautifully looked after and I could not recommend this as a place to stay highly enough."

"Without doubt the best self-catering holiday cottage we have had in the UK. The attention to detail was excellent - a beautifully designed interior with everything you could possibly need. The welcome pack, complete with gluten free cake, was much appreciated. Easton is well situated for historic houses and landscapes - Burghley, Belvoir and Grimsthorpe are all close by. Stamford has places to eat but we enjoyed the Cholmley Arms and the Olive Branch. Being able to explore the lovely gardens at Easton in the evening when everyone had gone home was a real treat. Thoroughly recommended. "

"We stayed a few days at the Lodge which was delightful, very clean and well equipped with a generous welcome pack. It was adjacent to the gardens with own private patio. We were so pleased with our stay that we have booked again for a week this time."

"After traveling over 3000 miles then a couple of weeks with different beds the ambiance of Easton walled gardens 'cottage' greeted me with a warm and luxury welcome. As I walked through the heavy castle studded door I instantly felt an overall welcome. Very cozy. Extremley clean, environmentally themed with recycle facilities this little piece of heaven was a complete escape from the maddening crowd. Lucious linens, beautiful beds, pretty view from the bedroom window. Then to top it all a marvelous outstanding modern bathroom. I highly recommend this beautiful cottage and it's unique grounds"

"My wife and I were looking for somewhere tranquil with a touch of quality. The Gatehouse, at the end of a single track road to the estate, gave us that. It has a unique turret look and its' interior has been restored to a high quality. The downstairs accommodation is perfect for two and at the top of the turret spiral stairs is a lovely bedroom and sizable en-suite. For two people it is the ideal getaway pad and yet handy, by car, for the local towns and restaurants. If you just want to chill out then having access to the beautiful restored gardens will do it for you, as it did for us."

"The Gatehouse Lodge is a unique and welcoming holiday cottage. Luxurious yet comfortable, it is perfect, and we felt at home yet pampered from the moment we arrived. I won't spoil the pleasure of finding out what yummy treats await your arrival, suffice to say they are absolutely delicious. The simple things that matter include a huge and very comfortable bed and the lovely big and beautiful bathroom with underfloor heating. The Gardens are literally a step outside the door and can be enjoyed at all times. The gardens are special, the history fascinating and the cafe is not to be missed."
