Bottle Cottage - Self-catering in Northumberland
Bottle Cottage, Morpeth, NE65 7DG, Northumberland
England,
Royaume-Uni
Country walks from your door take you to The Drake Stone, a mythical meeting place for Druids with views of the medieval ruins of Harbottle Castle. Carry on to Clennell Street, a truly ancient trackway and historic Drovers Road through the Cheviot Hills that crosses the border to Scotland, or visit the Lady’s Well in Holystone where St Ninian is reputed to have baptised early Christians.
Back at the cottage there’s a wood-burner to warm up in front of and a big TV with the full Sky package and books and games to keep everyone entertained. The country kitchen’s easy to work in, there’s room for six around the slate-topped table and another wood-burner keeps it all cosy. Take your nightcap out to the pavement bench to gaze at starry skies.
For meals out, The Star Inn, just over the lane next door, serves wood-fired oven based pizza and pastas, steaks from the Argentine grill and more. There's also a well stocked shop for all the essentials, fresh fruit and veg, and newspapers. For more places to eat and shops the towns of Thropton and Rothbury are a 15 minute drive.

Lorraine & Paul Dryden:
- Expand your mind - visit Kielder Observatory to view vast dark sky stars and huge bright moon up close - infinite inspiration - booking essential.
- Pull on your walking boots and walk Windy Gyle and Border Ridge taking part of the Pennine Way, about 10 miles reaching 2,103 feet at its highest. The walk begins in the Upper Coquetdale Valley past Alwinton with stunning views over England and Scotland.
- For a shorter less strenuous walk from your door, head up to the Drake Stone, a circular walk with expansive views. At the foot of the forest path, decide whether to turn right for home, or left to head to The Rose & Thistle in Alwinton for replenishment!
- Centrally placed to explore Hadrian’s Wall, it’s Roman forts and archeology, Corbridge and Hexham in the West, and the beautiful beaches of the Northumberland Coast, Alnwick Castle & Gardens (of Harry Potter fame) and quaint fishing villages in the East.
- Harbottle used to have its own brewery with Bottle Cottage the original bottling plant. The Star Inn over the lane serves a good pint and food - pizza baked in a wood-fired oven, pasta and seafood dishes outdoors and in. Exposed stone walls & logburners
- Discover the delights of Hepple Gin - produced 6 miles up the valley in Hepple using Juniper Berries harvested from the Estate moorlands and hills. They call it high fidelity gin. Find in local/national restaurants and Tully’s Delicatessen in Rothbury.
