2015/16
Off the beaten track, in a tiny Somerset village, is a mellow stone building, an old cider pub. It's a whole lot smarter now, tastefully updated, and yet emitting country warmth and character.
Locals flock for the log fire in the bar, the idyllic summer terrace, and the gorgeous food - Cornish monkfish, homemade pork scratchings, local cheeses with membrillo. Whether you drop by for a laid-back lunch, a candlelit dinner or a restorative pint of Lawrence's cider, it's a very pleasing place. You can stay the night above the pub (fancy a room with a view?) or in the coach house that reveals the sign 'Dogs and muddy boots are welcome!'
Head east 30 miles for quaint cobbled Shaftsbury, for houses, thatched cottages and weekly market high on a hill - or south for Dorset's Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage site.

- Corton Denham sits just three miles from the medieval market town of Sherborne, nestled in the dramatic hills that form the border between Dorset and Somerset.
- Sherborne Abbey is the centrepiece of the town with a lofty nave formed from one of the finest examples of fan vaulting in Europe.
- The town's history left its impression with two castles: the romantic ruins of the old castle, destroyed during the civil war and the New Castle perched on the edge of a scenic lake and beautiful deer park.
- The Macmillan and Monarch's way are close by and can offer long distance walks, an afternoon walk to and from the Queens Arms would be to Cadbury Castle, the home of King Arthur.
- National Trust properties close by include Stourhead and King Alfred Tower, Lytes Cary, Tintinhull House, Forde Abbey, Montacute House and East Lambrooke Manor Gardens, all within a 20 min drive.
