Walk in to exposed stone walls and a cosy fireplace at this traditional inn. Bedrooms are directly above, or in a separate conversion, but all are stylish and fresh, with smart TV, Roberts radio, Dyson fans and carefully dressed beds. Mini bars are packed with treats, some on the house, including a little bottle of prosecco and Tyrrells crisps. Bathrooms all have good showers and Bramley soaps.
A hearty breakfast is served until 10.30: full English, shakshuka, smoked salmon (from Severn & Wye Smokery) with avocado, lots of plant-based options and breads from Hobbs House Bakery. Walk it all off from the door – you'll find a thoughtful guide to local routes in your room, from gentle strolls to rugged hikes through the Mendip Hills AONB. Return to a rewarding pint of Butcombe beer in the garden.
Dinner is much better than average pub grub: the menu changes four times a year, there's a specials board and Sunday lunches are popular.
