A rural ramble brings you to a flint and brick bolthole – tucked into the courtyard of the main house. Joanna has restored her stables with a blend of old and new: beams, lime washed walls, rustic window sills, modern log-burner, swish new bathrooms. Bedrooms ('Hayloft' up, 'Coach House' down) are fresh and comfy – one has a double sofabed for extra guests. Wide French windows in the big dining/sitting room open to the pool – have a dip on summer mornings; dahlias and roses fill the garden. Joanna brings over breakfast: homemade jams, home-buzzed honey, a full English spread. Walk from the door; hop on a bike and discover nearby Bury.

  • We're in rural Suffolk, yet only three miles from the medieval market town of Bury St. Edmunds, which has a great deal to offer any visitor. It also has numerous bars, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes.
  • There is much to see and do in the local area, which is rich in natural beauty. We can guide you with information on your areas of interest. In addition, the horse racing centre of Newmarket and the university town of Cambridge are close by.
  • We are very near the junction of the National Cycle Routes 13 and 51. There is a dedicated cycle route into Bury and we can offer bikes to use and secure storage for your own.
  • All our food is locally sourced or produced by us. We believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we think you'll agree!
  • Our garden extends to two acres and is open under the National Garden Scheme. We hope you will enjoy it. The swimming pool is available during the summer months.

"An absolutely wonderful place to stay. So much more than a B&B. Joanna and Christopher have cleverly renovated the old stables into a very beautiful space, with tasteful fittings and furnishings and an extremely comfortable and huge bed. A large bathroom has a bath and a walk-in shower. Joanna is a wonderful hostess and her love of cooking and general home-making is obvious with home-made muesli, bread and jams for breakfast. Don't miss the garden either which is open under the NGS "Yellow Book" scheme and is absolutely beautiful. Yes, we loved it! "

"The Old Stable is a rare find and a real treat. I was warmly welcomed on arrival by Joanna who has lovingly restored this beautiful building sympathetically and stylishly. Joanna has thought of many special touches; fluffy towels, a wide selection of teas and homemade yummy biscuits! My favourite thing was breakfast where I was spoilt for choice. Almost everything is homemade or locally sourced. Freshly baked bread, eggs from Joanna's hens, delicious homemade museli & granola and honey from her bees which is one of the best I've tried. I will certainly be returning and would highly recommend."

"Genuinely warm welcome. Our accommodation in this quiet and peaceful rural setting was extremely comfortable, warm and clean. The Old Stable has retained its old world charm and has been modernised with great style. Wonderful breakfast from extensive menu, with home made bread, muesli, compotes, honey and eggs from owner Joanna's own hens - a real treat and many items available to buy. We had a memorable and enjoyable stay. Highly recommended. "

"Joanna is such a lovely host and the Old Stable is perfect. Fantastic breakfasts, spotlessly clean, beautiful bed and linen and lots of lovely touches such as freshly cut flowers from the garden on arrival in your room. I'd reccomend if staying for business or pleasure - I stayed for a couple of nights with work but it would be a great romantic getaway for a couple as well."

"What a lovely, quiet special place is The Old Stables. The facilities were absolutely delightful. Joanne our host couldn't have done any more to make our stay any more special. Lovely touches of fresh cut flowers from her garden and the added delight of a swimming pool. Within easy reach of beautiful Bury St Edmunds and lovely historical Lavenham. We are so glad we found The a Stables on Alastair Sawday's web site."
