An hour from Edinburgh, this large estate wrapped in ancient woodland & steeped in history is a super outdoorsy retreat – dogs welcome too

With their own ale, over fifty malts and a bevy of artisan gins, you'll find a toast for every occasion at this lovely country inn where bedroom names reflect the French and Scottish ancestry of the owners. With a sustainable 'field to plate' philosophy, much of the food in the restaurant comes from the estate and neighbouring villages - vegetables and herbs grown in the walled garden, venison from the Meikleour Forest, local meat and game from their in-house butchery. You can also sample some quirky finds from the less well known vineyards in Bordeaux.

Walk to the river for a morning’s salmon or trout fishing on the Tay – book a fly-fishing lesson with the head ghillie. Spot ospreys, otters, kingfishers. The Blairgowrie Golf Course is a five-mile drive, three others are within 30 miles. Book a tour of a couple of whisky distilleries. Scone Palace, Glamis and Balmoral are all within reach.

You stay in the 19th-century coaching inn or the serviced cottages in the grounds. The cottages have small kitchens, but you can wander over for breakfast in the restaurant each morning.

Claire Mercer Nairne:

  • Bring some sensible shoes and enjoy the surroundings. My top easy walks from the hotel: The Meikleour North Wood, The Shingle Beach and the River Tay. 5 min by car: the Woodland Trust Bluebell Wood, spectacular in May (easy parking).
  • Golfers who want to play at the nearby Blairgowrie Golf Club - please book in advance via the hotel reception as our guests benefit from exclusive discounts. Two championship 18 holes (the stunning Rosemount, the Lansdowne) and the Wee course (9 holes).
  • Blairgowrie is 10 min away . The two fishing tackle shops on the main street have a great selection of flies, tweed hats and posh wellies.
  • I love Dunkeld & Birnam: park in the town and head towards the cathedral. Another great walk nearby is the Hermitage (spectacular waterfall).
  • For some serious country chic retail therapy go to the House of Bruar near Pitlochry. This place is big (think Harrods in the Highlands) with an impressive choice of cashmere and plaids.
  • Visit Scone Palace (10 min away) the crowning place of Macbeth. Don’t miss the walled garden and the maze. Excellent coffee shop for a scone at Scone. Then head to Kinnoull Hill for a spectacular view of Perth (great walk) or rent a canoe at Willowgate.
