Clare and Sam introduce you to the delights of rural life on this 200-acre estate – and its warm, cosy, stylish retreats

Read guest comments

Send the children off to the Forest School, try their letterboxing and immerse yourselves in wildlife and rolling hills. This grand gothic house is home to the Bosanquet family, whose love of sustainable farming is inspiring.

They offer a barn conversion for two, with a little loft den (or bell tent) in the summer for children and grand-children. All ages love it here.

Raglan Castle is a ten-minute drive, the Forest of Dean half an hour, and the Brecons are just beyond. This is a foodie area so book lunch at The Bell at Skenfrith (about 10 miles), tour the vineyards of Ancre Hill (7 miles), and visit the Chapel in Abergavenny (12 miles). Then back for a stroll down the yew-tree walk, and a row on the wildlife-rich lake.

Clare Bosanquet:

  • Castles galore on the doorstep, it is border territory after all.
  • You can see the Wye valley from the wooded slopes above, or whizzing by as you tackle the white water in a canoe.
  • Our old industrial heritage is good too, if disappearing down a mine for the afternoon is your cup of tea.
  • Abergavenny as a foodie town with its annual festival is good place to find the best of our local produce.
  • Black mountains 20 minutes away, Brecons just beyond.

"Stable Court is beautifully maintained to give the best of vintage old with a few modern luxuries. Beds were soft, the achingly vast space we had was warm, the kitchen was thoughtfully stocked. Eco friendly cleaning products meant staying away with a particular allergy was, for the first time ever, not an issue. The hosts were reassuringly available if wanted but we had so much space and privacy even with other families staying on site we felt that the whole estate could nearly have been just ours. Beautiful surroundings and great for kids to explore. Honestly can barely wait to stay again."

"A beautiful place to stay, relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. We loved exploring the walled garden, rowing on the sunny lake and watching kingfishers on the water. The wood barn accommodation is extremely comfortable and thoughtfully equipped with cosy Welsh blankets and flowers picked from the garden. Clare was very welcoming and we enjoyed the whole atmosphere of the estate including the farm shop and friendly cat. Perfect for a relaxing break or exploring the countryside further afield. We look forward to returning and buying more Dingstow honey!"

"I visited Old Lands with my partner and three year old daughter. Such a peaceful & relaxing place. Clare offered a lovely welcome, we had a brilliant nature walk with Sam (newts, toads, moths), admired Collums delicate & beautiful work in the walled garden and our daughter loved the forest school with Catherine & Iris. We headed to lake every morning to row on the boats, played long games of hide & seek on the grounds, bought & cooked vegetables from the on-site shop that were picked fresh from the allotment. We also visited Abergavenny for couple hours which is a lovely little town."

"We had a thoroughly relaxing weekend at Old-Lands and the Wood Barn was perfect for our 2 dogs with a secure outside space and a big field right outside which they absolutely loved. The whole estate is magical and inspirational for garden lovers like me. The barn is tastefully decorated and well equipped and we loved being able to buy fresh vegetables from the shop on the estate."

"A return visit to this bucolic and beautiful retreat. Disconnect, read, swim, walk, laze, cook, row, summit mountains, ruddy your cheeks, fill your bellies with Penny's delicious food, top it up with the delights of Colm's garden, learn from the brilliance and knowledge of Sam and embrace the warmth that Clare creates and shares. Happiness. A secret little slice of an old time... at Old Lands. "

"We took our two young boys for a break in the Wood Barn and just had the most magical time. The accommodation is beautifully designed, comfortable and immaculate. The grounds are breathtaking and the farm shop and forest school facilities, brilliant.Trips on the boat and scrumping apples were a highlight for the kids! We can't wait to go back!"

"We had a fantastic weeks stay in the woodbarn. A beautiful barn conversion with simple rustic decor - I loved the welsh blanket curtains and old doors turned into a table & bed head! A very comfy double bedroom & a mezzanine with beds for 2 children. Our boys (aged 7 & 10) also enjoyed sleeping in the teepee just outside the barn. We pre ordered delicious homemade dinners from local caterer PJs. Lots to do on the estate including a nature walk with Sam looking at moths & pond dipping; tennis spectacular view; boating on the lake. Trips out included castles, Forest of Dean, Monmouth. 10/10"

"We had the most magical week in Oldlands. It is such a beautiful and tranquil place. We stayed in Horsehoes which is simple and stylish and overlooks beautiful gardens. We came with four children and they had the most fantastic time- exploring the grounds, rowing on the lake and doing forest school. The walled garden looks incredible at this time of year so we wandered through there in the balmy evenings to get some gardening inspiration and then bought fresh vegetables and provisions from the Oldlands shop. The whole place has such a lovely, warm atmosphere. Thank you for an idyllic stay!"

"We don't get out much, and we go away even less often, but we have just got back from a brilliant week at Old Lands, Dingestow in Monmouthshire. Its a wonderful place run by lovely people. The accommodation was great, loads to do nearby and the highlights included the pond-dipping and bug searches which Sam ran. We saw water scorpions and cannibalistic crested newts amongst other things! He has identified 900 species of flora and fauna living on the farm over the last 25 years--its a wildlife haven with everything from skipper butterflies to stoats, and Barn Owls. Fantastic family holiday!!!"

" We managed to find a three night break available with a weeks notice at Wood barn-and delighted when we got there and realised what an incredible place Old Lands is! The barn is very spacious, with lovely interior decor and a great patio and table - private and peaceful, perfect for sitting out playing games with a bottle of wine! The facilities are great, our son loved the boating lake and the tennis courts had an incredible view. Fresh produce in the shop makes an excellent addition to the wonderful meals that Penny supplied (details sent to you with your booking) we will be back! "

"We had a fabulous family weekend here in two of the cottages, both or which were furnished with style and extremely comfortable. It also was lovely to be able to eat together outside on the large tables particularly as the gardens were so pretty. The farm produce in 'the shop' was a real bonus. The estate is ideally situated between the Brecon Beacons and the River Wye with easy access to both. Old Lands was such a tranquil setting though it was hard to leave."

"Our first holiday with a new baby meant we needed somewhere easy to stay which was a relaxing break from home. We stayed in wood barn, with full length windows on one side making it feel part of the fields while also being quite private. The nature walk with Sam made us appreciate the estate even more and the balance between cultivated and natural makes an accessible adventure in to the wild. Local attractions aren't a long drive away but we could easily have spent the whole week at old lands, pond dipping, bug catching, walking around the lake and chilling in the barn. Perfect "

"A very special experience, amazing property and location, quiet but with loads to do. We went as a party and stayed in two properties, Stable Court and The Wood Barn. Evenings were spent at the large outside table at The Wood Barn - wine, conversation and watching the bats flit about. We felt lazy and ordered catering from Penny Johnstone (details available when booking), the food was excellent, loads of it and very reasonable for what you get, heartily recommend the stress free approach to keeping yourselves full and happy! Cannot recommend Old Lands enough, and it's only a drive down the M4"

"We all loved staying at Old Lands. The Barn is a beautiful space to relax in and the surroundings are even better. The kids loved all the running around , making daisy chains, rowing on the lake and finding little creatures. A very special place made by I guess a lot of special people. It has a really good feeling about it we will definitely come back. Thank you Sam for our little nature walk !"

"Fabulous location from which to base yourself and get out to the Forest of Dean and the beautiful Gwent countryside. Sam and Clare were great hosts and our kids loved Old Lands -space to roam and explore and connect with the natural world (Sam's a botanist, but also very knowledgeable about birds, creepy crawlies and the residents of Old Lands' ponds (our two older girls would have pond-dipped with Sam every day)). The accommodation is good quality (clean, well-maintained and with everything (including dishwasher!) you need to have a very comfortable self-catered get away."

"Very beautiful and relaxing stay. The cottage was perfect for our family holiday, the kids loved discovering the surrounding nature and neighbouring sights. Sam treated us with a nature walk and kids were mesmerized by the lake with the sweet boats. The cottage was very welcoming and well equipped, loved the flower arrangements."

"We had a super time staying at Stable Court with our 7 year old and our dog. It is perfectly positioned between the Brecon Beacons and the Wye Valley. Sam and Clare could not have been more helpful. Sam took great pride in introducing us to the wonderful array of nature at Old Lands. The Shop, which sold home grown veg and honey from the bees at Old Lands, was fantastic. "

"My family and I booked all three properties at Oldlands for a week in April; it is a very special place. Clare and Sam were welcoming and helpful and the properties clean and well equipped. The catered food we ordered for our arrival was delicious and the veg box wonderfully varied. We were able to relax and enjoy the beautiful grounds, go biking, play tennis, go boating on the lake and eat outside in the lovely courtyard. Sam was a mine of information and wonderful with the 5 young children. He took us all pond dipping, led a lovely nature walk and showed us some beautiful moths. Great week."

"An utterly perfect place to unwind and get back to nature. We stayed in the lovely Wood Barn with our two children (4 and 6). They loved: sleeping in their cosy 'crows nest', climbing trees, meeting the chickens, pond dipping, messing about on the lake, making mud 'potions', forest school and running free. We loved: letting our kids roam free, the freshly harvested produce from the shop, the views, Sam's encyclopedic knowledge of flora and fauna, the quiet, and the sunny evenings in the courtyard outside the Wood Barn. Unbeatable and magical. Can't wait to go back. "

"We had a fabulous week staying in Stable Court. The apartment was beautifully appointed, clean and comfortable. It is lovely and light, with beautiful views of the grounds from every window. One of the highlights of the week was Sam Bosquanet's wild life trail. It was fascinating to share his knowledge of the wildlife in the grounds. We had a delightful breakfast on the lake one morning and felt so relaxed sitting at the big oak table on the sheltered terrace, watching the doves that we wished we could stay for longer. Sam and Clare are fantastic hosts and we would definitely love to go back!"

Caroline - Eastbourne, United Kingdom

"We loved our stay at Stable Court! Clare and Sam made us feel very welcome, stopping by on our first evening with some great tips for the weekend. The young children had so much to see and explore that they were thoroughly exhausted by bedtime, and there were some great walks with the dog. We used the catered service and the food was delicious - although I would suggest that Penny should include instructions for those apartments that don't have microwaves. The Parsons Nose store/deli and Raglan Castle are worth a visit!"

"The indescribably beautiful countryside plus the comfortable old buildings as living quarters gave us an extremely pleasant and interesting stay with the larger family gathered round. The ethos of learning about wildlife, the respect for the countryside and the invitation for volunteers to work in the walled garden made Old Lands unique, guaranteeing a return visit for us. - And lovely people - Sam and Clare - overseeing it all. "I just spent a glorious spring week at Old Lands. I was staying (with husband and twin 5yo) in 'Horseshoes', which was fully equipped and very comfortable indeed. My parents stayed in 'Stable Court' and my in-laws were in 'Wood Barn'. All lovely accommodation, and overall a perfect setting for a family reunion. We all had our own space, yet were close enough to easily pop between each. The set up was more than simply convenient though, the accommodation and surroundings (and our hosts!) were engaging and inspiring. We barely left the grounds for the whole stay. Can't wait to return!"

"Old Lands is a magical place. Beautiful scenery & really comfortable well equipped accommodation. We loved Wood Barn & were blessed with good weather in March. Large tables outside Wood Barn & Stable Court enabled our family group to congregate and eat outside. Wildlife to explore, lake to row on, pond dipping & a tennis court meant that we hardly left. The only day trip was to the Bird of Prey Centre in Newent - well worth a visit. Ordering excellent prepared food & shop on site and in the village were a hit. Clare & Sam were welcoming with Sam's knowledge of fauna & flora a real bonus."

Mike - Warwickshire, United Kingdom

"We LOVED this place! We (myself, husband, 3 kids & dog) spent a truly relaxing week here in cold March 2017. Clare and Sam are so welcoming and have thought of everything you might need, the beds are really comfy, Stable Court is beautifully decorated, clean and warm. Lots of little touches like flowers, and a welcome hamper made it perfect. The kids loved exploring on site, taking the boat out, the wildlife walk, climbing nearby sugar loaf and exploring Raglan Castle. We adults loved having quality relaxed family time together. We'll be back!"

"We had a fantastic week staying in the wood barn. It was cosey, comfortable and beautifully decorated. Plus it had a well equipped kitchen, which always makes me happy! Sam and Clare couldn't have been more welcoming and we loved exploring the beautiful fields and meadows that make up Old Lands. We ranged from 6 to 76 years old, and there was something for everyone. My children especially enjoyed rowing on the lake and going on long muddy walks!"

"Old Lands is such a special place and we loved every minute of our stay. The location and surrounding countryside are stunning and you are transported to a completely different world. We are a family of four and stayed very comfortably in Horsehoes. The interiors are simple, stylish and well designed. Our five year old daughter did forest school and loved it; we bought fresh veg and eggs from the estate shop and also ordered delicious home cooked meals- such a treat not to have to cook all the time. We had beautiful walks in the estate, rowed on the lake and thoroughly relaxed. 10/10."

"We stayed at The Wood barn and it was heavenly. Beautifully decorated, using Welsh blankets throughout and is so tastefully done- every room opens out to a courtyard so you get so much light! You look out onto a private little courtyard, and the grounds beyond. We spent the whole time outside, either exploring the lake or walled garden, the shop and the curiosity cupboard! My two kids were on the search for something special to add to the hoard. The cottage is situated in such an idyllic place-we so look forward to coming back in the Summer. Thank you! "

"We stayed in Stable Court and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The surrounding countryside and settings were enchanting, the cottage itself was very lovely and we all enjoyed living in our Welsh fairytale for a week. Sam and Claire were welcoming and helpful, we all loved Sam's nature walk and pond dipping adventure. The on site shop stocks produce grown on the estate and the best apple juice we have discovered yet. Top marks for a Welsh holiday. We are already planning a return visit."

"My wife, daughter and I stayed in Horseshoes Cottage which was very tastefully decorated and furnished and well appointed. Clare and Sam were extremely pleasant and helpful without being intrusive. Our stay was made all the more enjoyable because of the scenic surroundings of Dingestow Court where we rowed on the lake and played tennis. It was pleasant to enjoy fresh estate bottled apple juice and a range of seasonal vegetables from the very impressive walled garden, cultivated and sold by Colum. We're looking forward to a return visit."

"This is a gorgeous place to stay. The Stable Court cottage is beautifully decorated, full of antique furniture and lovely decorative touches. There were fresh wild flowers in the bedrooms. The whole set up is very comfortable and there are lots of fun things to do with kids. Pond dipping sets are provided, you can go boating on the lake and there is as a lovely farm shop right next to the cottage. The family who run it are also very friendly and available. Highly recommended. "

"We stayed in Horseshoes Cottage at Old Lands in September 2016. The accommodation was very good and the setting beautiful. We particularly enjoyed walking round the gardens with the owner, who has an extensive knowledge of wildlife, and visiting the walled fruit and vegetable garden. We liked being able to buy fresh vegetables from the owner's on-site shop. The owners were very helpful and created a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We appreciated being able to order a meal in advance that was ready for us on arrival. The area is excellent for walking. We wish we could have stayed longer."

Properties decorated in beautiful, muted, contemporary colours, good furniture, tables protected with glass, interesting books, Welsh woven bedcovers and cushions, comfortable beds, lots of space and light and no clutter. "An amazing place to stay - in terms of accommodation (clean, beautifully decorated & comfortable), location (castles, Wye Valley, and Brecon Beacons on your doorstep), and environment. The set-up at Old Lands is perfect -- with the food shop, the nature walks, options to roam the land and row on the lake, and the Forest School for little ones. Highly recommend this place; we'll definitely be back. Special thanks to all who made our stay so special."

"I live locally, so know of Dingestow Court/Oldlands. I booked Stable Court for my daughter and family to stay in, while they were visiting from USA. Everyone had a wonderful time, boating on the lake, playing tennis, doing nature walks with Sam,visiting the hens and so enjoying the freedom to roam through the grounds. Stable Court itself was lovely. The furnishings and furniture matched the age of the building beautifully. The kitchen was really well equipped - important when you are staying for over two weeks and mostly cooking at home. Clare did everything possible to make us feel "at home.""

"We had a wonderful stay at Old Lands with our two boys, aged 5 and 3. Sam and Clare were great hosts, with Sam taking us on a nature walk, which we all enjoyed. The grounds of the hall provided many beautiful evening walks (and balance bike rides for the boys). The handy shop provided tasty and delicious food on the doorstep. An idyllic place to stay - we would love to return!"

"We visited beautiful Old Lands with our three little children this July/August. In between the Beacon Beacons and the Forest of Dean, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful places to visit. We travelled all around exploring caves and forests, but my little boy's favourite place was, unfailingly, 'the lake'. Our near daily walk around Old Land's lake, simply looking around, collecting leaves and sticks, was a highlight for us all, even more so when we were guided by owner Sam showing us the swan mussel colony and beautiful moths. A delightful place; I wouldn't hesitate to return."

"Lovely accommodation and setting, nice clean towels and sheets. The shop is great, I ordered a box of vegetables and salad which were there on arrival, nice and fresh. Also try some of the home made apple juice, delicious. We took our 5 month old Labrador puppy, who also enjoyed the grounds. Our boys had lots of fun boating on the lake. Great location, lots to see and do. Highly recommended. "

"An absolutely charming and relaxing place to stay, with owners keen to help you enjoy your stay but without interfering. We three adults enjoyed rowing on the lake, watching molehills being made and getting highly expert advice on local moths and other wildlife from Sam. We ordered a veg box from the walled garden and it was there on arrival, washed and truly delicious. The OldLands apple juice is definitely worth buying too. Plenty to do nearby - castles, river, hill and canal walks, cafes in Crickhowell. Excellent local food shops. Bring your scruffy clothes and boots and roam free!"

"Amazing place. Wonderful hosts, breath taking scenery, peaceful and relaxing surroundings. I could work, my mother could enjoy the gardens, my wife could read, and my children enjoyed playing out in the sun, exploring their surroundings and going for a forest school session. What Sam and Clare are doing here is truly remarkable and we will definitely find our way back here soon."

"We had a totally amazing stay at Old Lands in June. Sam and Clare were very welcoming and we loved being able to pop to the farm shop to buy fresh produce grown on site as well as the delicious and unusual Palestinian fair trade goods available. The Cottages are perfectly turned out and feel pretty spacious for a family. What makes it special is the laid back atmosphere and the space to walk and explore and discover nature. The owners are very knowledgeable and care deeply for the land, people and ecology of the area - this really comes through. My son and daughter loved the baby toads!"

"Old Lands is a peaceful and beautiful retreat for the whole family. We stayed in Horseshoes with our two children and were blown away by the lovely vintage look and feel of the property and the great space and design. The cottage is well equipped for self-catering as well as being spacious and comfortable for up to six people and the courtyard is perfect for a bbq (supplied). We loved exploring the grounds and surrounding area as well as just relaxing in the house. Locally Monmouth is great for independent shops and restaurants and Crickhowell and Hay on Wye equally lovely towns locally too.5*"

"We had a wonderful week in Stable Court. Old Lands is a great base from which to explore the hidden gems of the Welsh borders. Stable Court was a delight - beautifully decorated; a space full of light and character. We loved the home-produced bacon and apple juice. Thoroughly recommended."

"The immediate impression one gets on entering the cottage is of a spacious and thoroughly pleasing series of rooms. My family took both cottages which are ideal for children of all ages. The bed I had was one of utter luxury. The open fireplaces, the thick old walls, the homely touches all add up to a beautifully and thoughtfully restored interior.the two cottages are separated by a carefully designed courtyard garden. I can't speak highly enough of this very special place. There is plenty to be enjoyed in the surrounding grounds and countryside. "
