A countryside escape for 2 near Chepstow with traditional interiors and cheery wood-burner. Not suitable for children but dogs very welcome

Well hidden down a bumpy track is this deceptively spacious, rose-strewn cottage with greeny-blue doors and windows. You step straight in to the living room for absolutely no surprises, just a straightforward comfy place with a mishmash of family stuff, books, fresh flowers and a wood-burner with plenty of logs - a super place to crash after a day of hearty walking. Off here is the kitchen - simple but with all the mod cons and stuff you need for holiday cooking. Upstairs you'll find a vast bed with a smart upholstered headboard and good quality cotton sheets next to a roomy bathroom with proper bath as well as shower over and a selection of lotions and soaps. On one side you have your own sheltered patio, which feels nicely private, with far-reaching views to the distant Black Mountains; and on the other is an orchard with a dreamy fire pit area for cooking and star gazing. You can walk from the door to a fairly good pub, start your journey along Offa's Dyke, canoe on the river Wye or cycle in the wonderful Forest of Dean. Kindly and warm owners Laura and Euan are just down the drive in their farmhouse and leave you lots of basics. Great value.

Laura Kelway-Bamber:

  • If castles light your fire, then you're spoilt for choice with Chepstow, Caldicot and Raglan each boasting their own magnificent stone-built castle, or maybe, like Wordsworth it will be the lure of Tintern Abbey (less than 2 miles away) that draws you.
  • Being an area of outstanding natural beauty there are cool forests to stroll or bicycle in, hills and mountains to climb, a natural cave system to explore, valleys to picnic in, and even the beauty of the Gower Beaches to explore a little further afield.
  • If it's an adrenaline fix you're after then head to The National Diving + Activity Centre (just outside Chepstow) and experience weightlessness 245ft in the air on a giant 3G swing, or take a zip wire trip along the length of the 80m deep flooded quarry.
  • Head underground and discover the delights of Clearwell Caves, a natural cave system mined for iron ore for years but now open to the public. Or go down Big Pit, a working coal mine from 1880 - 1980 but now a fascinating industrial heritage museum.
  • Gastronomes can indulge in the sensational tasting menu at The Whitebrook (15 min drive)which boasts a Michelin star and makes an unforgettable dining experience. Or arrange your stay to take advantage of Abergavenny's famous Food Festival in mid September
  • For those who seek peace and quiet you need go no further than the sun loungers on your private patio, the seat at the end of the orchard, or maybe the swing bench, glass of wine in hand, listening to the prolific birdsong and admiring the stunning view.
