L'Atelier - Bed & Breakfast in Hérault
9 Rue de la Poudriere, 34500 Béziers, Hérault
Languedoc - Roussillon,
France
This 1870s house, part of a terrace, sits in the heart of old Béziers. A short walk away find the magnificent 12th-century cathedral siting in a beautiful square with superb views. The quirky bed-sitter is all yours; a long counter round the original stone sink, a seating bench for two (not large) people, a folding metal table and chairs, a wicker chair for reading.
Carole lives on the two floors above and hangs a breakfast basket on your front-door grille each morning with croissants, baguette, a flask of hot milk. Cheese, charcuterie and eggs are also available if your stay is longer than two nights. In the fridge you'll find milk, butter, jam, yogurt and fruit compote. Tempting to nip back to bed with it all. A good shower later and you'll be on your way to explore the town, not so large as to be overwhelming and with lots of surprises.
Step onto the street where children zoom their scooters, mums chatter.

Carole Gardner:
- Béziers is the oldest city in France. Founded by the Romans and razed during the Cathar crusade, it is now best known as the birthplace of Paul Riquet, the man behind the stately Canal du Midi. Guided tours can be arranged with Carole.
- Many churches and the magnificent cathedral are open for the public to view with much history attached to them. Of particular interest to many is the Cathar history associated with this region and specifically here in Beziers the St. Mary Magdalene Church.
- The 9 Locks of Fonseranes are a UNESCO world heritage site, and can be reached either by the Le Petit train running back and forth from the town centre or by a beautiful walk which takes approximately 25 minutes, via the stunning Pont- Vieux over the R.Orb
- Stroll around the pretty squares or along the Allée Paul Riquet, with its cafes and restaurants, markets and brocantes. Or jump on a bus or train to one of the many beautiful beaches just 15km away, and enjoy the beach bars and the warm Mediterranean Sea.
- History fills the streets and squares of Béziers, and Trompe d'Oeil are scattered throughout, illustrating different scenes from her history. Follow the trail or take a guided tour with your host, finding quirky squares, beautiful churches, panoramic views
- If you have artistic leanings, lithograph workshops are held in an artists atelier in a cobbled side street, or sip a glass of chilled wine while enjoying a plate of local oysters . From Michelin starred to classic bistro its all here in Béziers!
