Friendly hosts, lovely log fires, delicious dinners, interesting antiques – and Frederick’s special tours of a WWI memorial site

The prosperous looking manor by the church (once a modest farmhouse) has become a splendid B&B. Tea in the salon with Frederick – Anglophile restorer with a great sense of humour – is civilised and fun, while dinner at the big table (homemade orange wine, local organic produce) with both hosts, and perhaps other guests, is a gorgeous feast. As for the suites, they have been designed in the spirit of the house, one à la Napoleon III, the other Louis Philippe. Towels are snowy, bed linen crisp and all is generous and bright. Wake to fruit compotes served on antique china, come home to a beautiful box-hedged garden.

"This former farm building still feels authentically rural. Character oozes out of every corner. Frederick and Nicholas create genuine home comforts from local resources helping guests to relax away from the stresses of life whilst offering top quality WIFI. They are fine hosts who enjoy sharing their time with you. The feeling was reciprocated. Superb value for money and more accessible than you think"

"We only had a 2 night stay at the 3 Officiers, but what a wonderful place it was! We had such a lovely welcome from Frederick. There was an instant sense of calm the minute we were through the door. Breakfast was just delightful - from homemade lemon cake to 'pain perdu'! Delicious! All the rooms were beautifully decorated. Nothing was too much trouble - our host gave us information about the local area and even booked a restaurant for us! We would have loved to have stayed longer and plan to re-visit when we get the opportunity. Thank you Frederick and yet another Sawday's success for us!"

"A stunning building bursting with antiques and curios set in a magical garden. The rooms are incredibly comfortable and beautifully decorated with style and panache. We loved Frederick the host who makes the most delicious French breakfast which included home made jam, organic muesli, home made yoghurt, mirabelle plum compote and French toast. We cannot recommend this place highly enough, we will definitely return."

"From the moment you arrive Frederick ensures that your stay is a very special one. You are made to feel very much apart of the house and every detail ensures you feel cared and looked after although never over the top. From our welcome drink to our parting gift of homemade chocolate macaroons (absolutely delicious) we enjoyed all aspects of our stay. The highlights are however in Frederick's passions of cooking and antiques as the house is beautifully furnished. The food and drink was exceptional reflecting the local region. The breakfast was incredible - a real treat. We will be back!"

"What a wonderful setting, beautifully restored French farmhouse filled with period antiques selected and assembled with deliberate care and great flair. We stayed here with a group of friends (2 couples), and we received the most wonderful hospitality. Great dinner complemented with wine the first night, followed the next morning by one of the most delicious breakfasts imaginable. Fresh, local everything from jams and bread to cheeses and yogurt. Frederick has infused the place with a truly unique and wonderful spirit."

"If you are travelling through France and are within 50 or perhaps even a 100K of Les 3 Officiers then do make the detour. We are very well travelled but rarely have we had such a perfect stay. Great room, great food , fantastic host ... really couldn't fault the place"

"Relaxing stop close to the memorials of Verdun and on the route to Strasbourg. A warm welcome from Frederic with a refreshing drink in the garden. Rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated and with stylish bathrooms. Frederic and Nicolas have filled the house with curiosities and objet d'art. Breakfast is taken in the kitchen with original Lorraine fireplace and consists of delicious bread, pastries and homemade compotes served with local organic juices and the best breakfast tea in France!"

"Absolutely superb. Just as described. Wonderful home made food and drink. Most acceptable wines generously served with dinner. Charmingly amusing host. Fabulous house and furnishings. Great alarm clock next door. Apparently Frederick has done a deal with the local Padre to ring the Angelus at 8 a.m. instead of 7 a.m. in consideration of his guests. Covered parking in adjacent barn. Very secure. Highly recommended."

"Hospitality, comfort and food PAR EXCELLENCE! A perfect stop-over on our way from Uzès to the Amsterdam ferry. Our room was very large, beautifully equipped/furnished and with the comfiest of beds. The historic house is elegant and meals are served in style. Pre-dinner drinks (home-made wines made from local, interesting fruit) were followed by an outstanding, leisurely dinner, enjoyed with fellow guests and our excellent hosts, Frederick and Nicholas, who share the cooking. Breakfast, one of the best ever, was served in the large original kitchen. We'll be back to explore this fascinating area."

"A wonderful experience and hearing about the history of the house was fascinating. We were provided a very welcome cold beer on arrival. We had booked an evening meal and Frederick and Nicholas were wonderful hosts - it was great to eat en famille. Our room was very comfortable with 2 comfy chairs to relax in and a nice view of the garden and beyond and a spacious bathroom with lovely soft towels. The breakfast in the old 'farm' kitchen was wonderful with lots of home made local specialties and set us up for the day. We were also given on departure a beautifully wrapped small gift for our journey."

"We have spent 4 glorious nights at Les 3 Officiers in the Lorraine region. Frederick & Nicholas are outstanding hosts and their elegant home is full of beautiful furniture and objet d’art. Our bedroom was super comfortable. Breakfast was provided in their own kitchen complete with log fire and dinner(if requested) is served in their beautifully appointed dining room, after, of course, an aperitif and appetizers served in their fine sitting room. Our hosts were very knowledgable and generous with information regarding places to visit in the Lorraine region. We shall return. "

"One of the best Sawday's places we've stayed at. Fascinating house and hosts who really make you feel at home. Nothing is too much trouble and Frederick even baked us some biscuits for our long journey home! Wish we could have stayed longer, but we'll be back!"

"A truly unusual but special place to stay, our favourite over the 10 days that we spent travelling in France. The house has been beautifully restored, the bedrooms are large & dreamy, the food utterly delicious & as a guest we were made to feel very welcome. The area around Verdun is fascinating & Frederick has extensive knowledge about the battles & the local history. Highly recommended, a really lovely house to stay in with exceptionally kind hosts."

"Simply lovely!! Frederick and Nicolas are wonderful hosts in a charming, quiet and beautiful old farmhouse, tastefully refurbished. Beds that are too comfortable for an early start to the day and excellent food and hospitality served in a relaxed but thoughtful manner. Cannot recommend highly enough and deserves far more than simple Sawday's 'thumbs up'! We will be back to this beautiful part of the world as soon as possible. One note of caution: beware of the Damson liquor, it makes leaving the comfortable beds even more challenging!! Great for a stopover or a longer stay."

"Too much to say..but, in summary, Frederick and Nicolas have sympathetically renovated and decorated this lovely old farmhouse to create a luxurious yet comfortable home. Their attention to detail is evident everywhere, from the décor and furnishings in the rooms to the delicious dinner and breakfast using local and home-made produce. They are natural hosts and take great delight in welcoming and entertaining you and making sure you have everything you need during your stay or for your onward journey. They are wonderful company and offer lovely little extras that make a stay here a real treat"
