Deep in undulating countryside, 3 pretty stone cottages with a shared, family-friendly saltwater pool. English hosts cook supper on Sundays

This is great for families – no need to bring all the gear, it’s here to borrow. Along with animals to pet, eggs to collect, table tennis and bikes, there’s a shaded pétanque court and a beautiful, shared limestone pool to splash in too.

With three gîtes on site you will see and hear other guests but you each has their own lawned garden with teak loungers, fig trees and herbs. Two cottages interconnect if you rent both; all have original honey-coloured stone walls, oak beams, natural colours and fabrics. Bedrooms are simple and elegant.

With its sunflower fields, pale stone walls and carthorses, the village of Mandegault is a reminder of how rural France used to be. Cycle along well-marked trails to tiny hamlets, drive to Chef-Boutonne (3 km) for its bustling food market and château; sip Pineau des Charentes alongside locals in a café on the town square. Sit down with Alison and Francis on Sunday evenings for local wine and dinner, made from scratch with home-grown produce.

  • Guests are more than welcome to pick fruit & vegetables from the organic garden and prepare something delectably fresh in the well equipped kitchens. Sample our 'coeur de boeuf' tomatoes 'au naturel' and let the children go wild picking raspberries
  • Guests with little ones really appreciate our baby kit and say we should shout about it. This includes cot & bedding, high chair, buggy, baby bath, monitor, paddling pool & is supplied free of charge. Bikes, child seats & safety helmets are also available
  • Set in the heart of the 'Pays d'Art et d'Histoire' of the Pays Mellois. Peppered with delightful Romanesque churches which become the focus for 'Les Nuits Romanes', a rich array of quality concerts and performances throughout the summer months.
  • Countryside walks on your doorstep along limestone 'chemins blancs' bordering fields of sunflowers. Wander down to the local Bastille Day celebrations held on the tree lined village 'place' where you'll be assured authenticity & an incredibly warm welcome
  • There's a wealth of local 'brocantes' and 'vide greniers' to forage for wonderful gems of French bric a brac and why not join the locals for a long lunch at the traditional 'mechoui' (spit roast) and discuss the origins of your found treasures!
  • Join us for a welcome apéritif and sample our home made Pineau des Charentes, Basil wine and nibbles made with home produced chutneys or book an evening meal at our 'table d'hôtes' of home produce

"We spent a lovely week here with our three young daughters. Alison and Francis made us feel welcome right from our arrival. Every detail in their cottages is taken care of with attention for the history of the farm and ensuring comfort. It was a real oasis in which we could enjoy spending time as a young family. "

"We stayed with our daughter, son-in-law and 10-month-old grandson and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for Francis and Alison, including waiting dinner for our delayed arrival after easyJet cancelled our flight, and this set the pattern for the rest of our stay. The facilities that we used, including those for babies and young children, are exactly as described and, despite some not particularly good weather, we did not feel that there was anything missing from our accommodation. Most importantly, our grandson, had a good time and so we were able to enjoy our break too. "

"My husband, our 9 month old daughter and I spent two glorious weeks on our first ever family holiday with Alison and Francis. We could not have asked for a better experience or more welcoming hosts. The gite was immaculate, stylishly decorated and the baby kit saved us from bringing a car load of stuff. The grounds were the stuff of childhood dreams - we fed the chickens, watched the sheep being sheared, picked raspberries, swam in the pool and splashed in the paddling pool. We picked herbs from the garden for our evening BBQs. Alison even made jam for us with the fruit we picked! You must go!"

"Oh what a wonderful place to recharge our batteries! Alison and Francis could not have been better hosts and the house was so comfortable and pretty we really didn't want to leave. Our delicious dinner on the last night, all cooked by Alison and accompanied by generous amounts of wine, was the perfect way to end our stay. Counting the days until we can return..."

"We were travelling to our son's wedding in Nîmes and looking for a place to chillout & relax before a very busy week.We made our booking very late, like 10pm the night before for just 3nights (much to Alison's surprise) but she was very accommodating and accepted a short let. Francis & Alison made us very, very welcome - goodies in the kitchen, beautiful gîte, comfy bed & wonderful surroundings - bliss! Alison & Francis invited us for aperitifs - a lovely evening. We couldn't recommend them or their gîte too highly! Visit & enjoy!"

"We stayed in the Four du Boulanger with our 20 month old. This place is an absolute delight - perfect for small children. Lovely enclosed private garden but much fun wandering to pick raspberries or feed the chickens. Every detail in the kitchen is brilliantly thought through - perfect to make the most of the seasonal veg welcome basket (it's the only time I've made soup on holiday). The owners were warm and we had a fantastic meal outside on the first night. Can't recommend this place highly enough. Beautiful."

"We stayed as guests of Alison and Francis at the beginning of August 2014, and the memories of our blissful week at Le Clos des Jardins still linger. Utterly charming hosts who went way more than the extra mile: delicious home-cooked food on the night of our arrival: wonderful, charming cottage where we felt relaxed and at home; an abundant garden brimming with flowers and vegetables that we could harvest and a menagerie of animals that kept the children amused with their antics. We shall treasure our summer holiday memories for a long time."
