The Hidden Cottage - Self-catering in Co. Donegal
Ardara, F94 X3C1, Co. Donegal
Ulster,
Irlande
Apart from the Lodge next door, you're on your own. There is grand walking straight from the door - puff up the hill behind you for views to the distant Blue Stack Mountains. Inside the croft is open plan, spacious, contemporary - and warm thanks to underfloor heating. There's a wood-burner too for evening cheer.
Cooking will be sociable and easy with basics at hand and a hamper of wine and biscuits, as well as local handmade soap. There are books to read, maps and guides for walks, good lighting and art, gorgeous views through all the windows and pretty fabrics designed by owner Charlotte. Bedrooms have vintage mirrors and a mix of antique and mid-century furniture.
There are two outdoor spaces, one at the back for the morning sun and a garden in the front with a barbecue, table and chairs for watching fabulous sunsets over the loch.

Simon & Charlotte England:
- The Hertiage town of Ardara sits a short distance down the hill, you'll find the legendary Nancy’s Bar which will welcome you with a dram of the local Silkies whisky or of course a pint of Guiness. Enjoy a night of music in the Beehive or the Corner Bar
- Drive the Wild Atlantic Way and discover hidden coves down small windy lanes, walk along the wide golden sands which edge the coastline, done your wetsuit and ride some of the best waves in the western world.
- Put on your hiking boots and conquer the heights of the Blue Stack, walk to the top of the highest cliff in Europe - Slieve League and look out over the Atlantic ocean or simply hunker down in a nearby inn and pass the day with some local craic.
- Take a trip to Glenvegh Castle, sat in the middle of a beautifully rugged National Park, the fairytale castle sits overlooking a loch. Take a stroll through the well kept gardens and wander through the castle rooms to see how the owners once lived.
- Drive to the West coast and visit Glencolmcille folk village to see how The Hidden Cottage would have looked in past. Then travel further along to visit Studio Donegal to see hand-weaving in action, the way it has been done for centuries.
- At the end of your day's adventures return to the cosy cottage, simply light the fire, pour yourself a drink, sit taking in the private view across the valley and lake beyond.
