Playground of the well-to-do, this is where Romans in the know take their holidays. You can see why, it's a sublime spot, full of well-groomed wine estates, breathtaking beaches and low-slung hills dotted with horses and cattle. And, it's under two hours from Rome.
Rumble down a country lane, through wooden gates, to arrive at a welcoming family home. Upstairs are four big comfortable bedrooms, two with sweeping views over the manicured gardens. There are four bathrooms, plus a downstairs loo, and extra sofa beds in case the kids bring friends. The house has two living areas with books, games, ping pong, keyboard, and two well-stocked kitchens.
Barbecue on the terrace, lounge in the divine garden, swim some gentle laps around the pool - beautifully illuminated at night. At sunset head to the coast for an aperitivo or a seafood dinner at one of the beach clubs. It's a ten-minute drive to pretty Capalbio for shops and restaurants.
