Built in 1879, the house sits just off the Plaza Mayor in Zahara, a breathtaking pueblo blanco perched on a rocky crag in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. Steep cobbled streets and narrow winding alleys speak of its Moorish past, and the village is dominated by a 13th-century castle – views soar to the reservoir from the terraces of the house. Inside it's cool and contemporary, with much luxury, from beautifully dressed beds and a very well-equipped kitchen, to a projector for films, chess and other games, art books and a chimenea with logs supplied.
Outdoors, there's a barbecue area with stairs leading up to the pool – not huge, but very welcoming when it's hot. From here you'll listen to village life, children playing, church bells ringing and some rapid Spanish.
Drive ten minutes to swim in the freshwater lake, step out to superb local restaurants and cafés; walking tours can be organised plus visits to local sites.
