Nature lovers will be tempted to this gem of a village cottage in the Duddon Valley – a truly peaceful slice of the Lakes

This cosy cottage, once a travellers' inn, was the village post office from 1890 to 2020. You can feel its history in the pop of red from the still-in-use telephone and Victorian post boxes, the sturdy beams and smooth flagged floors.

The owners have renovated with care, shining a light on charming original features while adding smart, modern must-haves. Underfloor heating, two sitting rooms, art-lined walls, a boot room for wet gear and a spacious, well-equipped kitchen with lovely pottery make staying here a dream. You'll eat at the wooden table looking up to the mighty fells (The Caw). Upstairs, two inviting bedrooms complete the picture.

Sip your morning coffee on the sunny patio before striding into the countryside, hopping on a bike or dipping in the river. Return from lakes and fells, fire up the wood-burner and settle in with a board game while supper cooks. On summer nights, stargaze around the fire pit on the lawn.

Lesley & Mike Birch:

  • The River Duddon, Wordsworth's favourite river, is just minutes' walk from Jean's Cottage. Enjoy a wild swim under the Duddon Bridge or explore further for ancient stepping stones and deep pools. Watch you don't slip!
  • Put on your walking boots and venture out from the cottage door on to the nearby fells and valley walks. Take in the tranquil riverside and spectacular views towards the high mountains and far estuaries.
  • Visit the nearby town of Ulverston. Walk up the hill to Sir John Barrow Monument. Afterwards, browse around quirky vintage shops; indulge in tea and scones at Gillam's Tearooms; buy local sausages from Irvings Butcher; visit the Laurel & Hardy Museum.
  • Take a cruise on the Steam Gondola around the lake from Coniston, stopping off at Brantwood, the home of artist John Ruskin. Visit their art exhibition, tour the house and enjoy the terrace cafe with stunning views across the lake to the hills.
  • If you're into history, take a picturesque walk to the little visited neolithic site of Swinside Stone Circle, originally known as Sunkenkirk. Finish your day down at Silecroft beach and cafe.
  • Enjoy a morning walk for your breakfast eggs free-range. 15 minutes either way from the cottage, you'll find two farms with fresh eggs by the roadside. Sometimes duck eggs are on offer.
