The Yan - Hotel in Cumbria
Broadrayne Farm, Grasmere, LA22 9RU, Cumbria
England,
Regno Unito
This converted farmhouse and its outbuildings are a mile outside Grasmere - just the right distance to wander in and potter around. You’ll find plenty of cafes for tea and cake, independent gift shops to browse, and a visit to Dove Cottage, William Wordsworth’s home from 1799 to 1808, is a must.
The bistro is a family-run affair with Dave and Sally behind the scenes, their daughter Jess cheerfully running front of house, and son-in-law Will heading up the kitchen. The breakfast menu is interesting: from a plump filled floury sarnie to the Yan brekkie, salmon and eggs or homemade muesli with yoghurt and seasonal fruit. Lunch and dinner is modern European with a twist. Eat in the airy bistro, or out on the terrace in fine weather.
Unfussy bedrooms all have sofas, views of the fells and en suite shower rooms. There’s a guest sitting room to take your tea in after days out. Ambleside is only three miles away and Lake Windermere, Coniston and Keswick are all within a half hour drive.

Local points of interest from Dave & Sally Keighley:
Punti d'interesse locali da
Dave & Sally Keighley:
- Our name ‘The Yan’ directly translates to ‘the one’ from the old Cumbrian dialect counting system that is still used for counting sheep today.
- The farm house stands on a large boulder base; there was probably an earlier building than the present house which dates to circa 1620.
- The name 'Broadrayne' traces back to the old Norse language and translates as 'Broad' (wide) and 'rein' (long strip). The farm sits above what would have been the flood plain of the valley and below the high fells behind the farm.
- Broadrayne Farm has over the years bred some of the best sheep in the Lake District. The grey-faced sheep you can see round the farm are Lakeland Herdwicks.
- We also have various poultry wandering around the farm, including runner ducks and various hens
