Care for the planet has been a priority while restoring this ancient inn: among other things, 90% of supplies to the kitchen come from within a five-mile radius (which means the food is seasonal, fresh and delicious) and the building has superb insulation (keeping you cosy when the weather is brisk). But there's no lack of comfort and some gorgeous architectural features have been lovingly retained – there's a real sense of respect for history here.
Bedrooms are in the old piggery, three downstairs with their own patios and two upstairs. All are simple and spacious with crisp white bedding, soft duck feathers and calming colours. Dark skies and lack of any road noise will help you nod off comfortably. There's an extra bedroom in a separate cottage with its own sitting room and small kitchen if you want to feel more independent.
Breakfast will set you up for bracing hikes in the National Park, or puffs up peaks for stunning views.
